it's the tunes that matter, not the technique or technology

( I'll probably delete all these posts because I am extremely drunk off German supermarket rum, but, "whatever" )

specifically this, a 13 euro bottle that is impeding any semblance of "rational" thought

@william_kent yeah I’m there with you 100%! But like I said, from someone I know who’s just getting out there as a DJ, seems no one’s been saying or ever would say to them “oh your selection is so good, so no need to conform to our rules.”

haven’t been to a ‘club’ since 2006, last presence was 2011 and that was directly for a tans mate’s wedding where the consensus showed multiple threats existed and the door staff couldn’t be trusted

what am I missing, a coat getting taxed from a cloakroom?

what i genuinely miss are extended sets with mates over long weekends where the only restriction was being outdoors, no real restriction at all issit just as long as tunesmith players were vetted fully -can’t have bs psytrance dreds sneaking in and wreaking havoc on quality drugs maaaaan

love records but one deck and a decent system is ample if people took a step away from formula, if it was good enough for Mancuso .. equally sets which push techniques and music I probably wouldn’t explore are always welcome or you groove your way into a rut - from Dissensus have to thank @thirdform @0bleak @droid @other_life for such deep dives among selectors

claiming CDJs have superior sound output

this is true to some degree, but enough that people will notice? hmm.......................................................

A lot of other stuff I could talk about here, but I think most of the main points have been covered.

The Hitman and Her (you’ve come a long way Michaela) always had a resident quasi-itinerant much older bloke among its yoof punters to mock

Atypically boss-eyed, incongruent, dressed oddly, probably paid to appear with free piss to drink. One of these boys had to have been glassed or bottled or sparked out clean at least once. Would make a brilliant Sun headline “I was scarred for life by Pete Waterman: Compo was 12,000 Pints and Liver Sclerosis”

Hitman and her - Hacienda 1989

for context

rumour: Davina McCall, Big brother presenter, was spotted being taken ANAL while bent over the pool table in the "gay traitor" basement bar in the Hacienda

this was one of the best Hitman episodes, the disjunct between coked up Michaela and loved up Mancs was something to behold

before this episode we were subjected to white shirt and black tie meat markets at Maxines, Wigan with "Wiggy" dancing on stage

"WORK THAT HOUSE baby"

a year before that that hitman episode residents of Manchester had already been exposed to Acieeed on late night TV

courtesy of A Guy Called Gerald ( @catalog - ask me about the time I met him in 1987 )

this is a disturbing episode, Tony Wilson of Factory fame does not suit rubber, but my Wing Chun brother Salz features about 4:04

Other Side of Midnight - Victoria baths 1988

skip to 6:13 for Voodoo Ray "live"

this was one of the best "Other Side of Midnight" episodes

?????/blackburn Warehouse Acieed party episode 1989

t-coy, gerald!

edit: I'm sure there was another side of midnight broadcast from 1987 that featured awkward dancing to strobe and dry ice with acid beats ( I will try my best to retrieve this memory )

I was doing a lot of bathtub speed at this time while watching late night television, so my memory may be bit "off"

00:00 to 9:23 - Tony Wilson + guff + T-Coy
09:23 12:19 A Guy Called Gerald Voodoo Ray "live"
[...[ [ advert break ]
12:37 Happy Mondays, who cares wtf the tune? is ?

etc

++++

Nah if that’s true please do. I really don’t trust DJs for advice (or about music opinions) but I trust you @0bleak

It's not that I'm guarded about it, it's more that, since I moved again, I need to keep unpacking and organizing instead of being online :)
But, basically, unless you're friends with them, you kind of have to deal with their gatekeeping, hierarchies, and politics.
Unless you've otherwise got some leverage from being known and established, you pretty much have to go along - which means just bringing your "sticks and cans" as they say.

(a pair with a standard mixer is upwards of $3k USD).

Don't know if you would be able to afford it, but you would probably be able to get a used XDJ-RX2 on ebay for ~$1000. An XDJ-RR could probably be had for $500, but it's smaller and it isn't going to be as close to using CDJs as an RX1, 2 or 3.
These are standalone Pioneer controllers that don't need a laptop, and the advantage is being able to practice on what is as close as possible to club standard without spending 3k+.
You would also have your own convenient fairly portable party-rocker.
I went to a party at a place in Seattle a few years ago where all of the DJs just used an RX2 that someone brought to the venue for everyone to use.

pass the sick bucket
@IdleRich @wektor @thirdform @0bleak and anyone else here who DJs. Is there really a point to the CDJ hegemony? Maybe this has been discussed before but you can’t search ‘cdj’ here… I’d like to play tunes out, and there’s studio space equipped with CDJs I can rent out to practice on, but what’s the point? A friend of mine who’s been playing for the first time recently reports that promoters and even others on the bill scoff at the idea of bringing your laptop/controller/interface setup, claiming CDJs have superior sound output, and that this is how “real DJs” do it, as if CDJs require some kind of extra skill and not simply limited access or tons of disposable income to purchase (a pair with a standard mixer is upwards of $3k USD). Also, that people roll their eyes at using the sync button… on digital equipment… with BPM counters and waveform visualizers… yeah I’m so much more authentic and talented for fiddling with fake pitch sliders that aren’t connected to a motor, let’s throw away precious time that could be spent on crossfader acrobatics and dynamic blends, on emulating the old heads. I also leave my washing machine unplugged as I scrub my laundry inside of it by hand.

What’s the point of all this? Smooth transitions between acts in the booth? Pioneer psyop? Pining for the days of Technics standardization? When seeing the above show, DJ Spinn bypassed the CDJ setup and had a standalone controller of his own, and nobody batted an eye or spent any time fiddling with switching channels, the hand-off was smooth, it was obviously figured out during soundcheck. I’m just curious people’s experience with this and similar DJ politics in general. I’m with Third when it comes to ‘fuck a DJ’ but playing tracks out on equipment you can afford and have practiced on/are familiar with on a big system to even a small gaggle of hungry dancers is really really fun. I’m already up against the Brooklyn Cultural Mafia as it is and then there’s the Resident Advisor Mafia with their gun fingers choreography, shitty club music decorum and gear snobbery?!

I don't dj out but part of it is they want to see djs working the decks, as if you say, pressing a few buttons unconnected to a motor means anything.

that being said, the issue is never cdjs the tech inherently, but the hierarchies of friendship. otherwise live laptop sets are all sorted during soundcheck. The industry is incredibly nepotistic and narcissistic, and most of the people who now attends these events don't even deserve to dance really. Your best shot is to become friends with a bunch of down to earth promoters (appreciate this is easier to do in London than in NYC - though no walk in the park!)

You might be able to sell some hogwash to the egotists about 4-6 deck mixing and making live edits on the fly, which can't be done on cdjs.

This is sort of true for me (I mix on 4 laptop decks) but also being visually impaired, there's little rational reason for me to use visual cdj screens when I have a screen reader on my laptop.

Under the dictatorship of the proletariat, which will of course be a dictatorship over consumption, not only will we be setting record label quotas - 5 releases per year max, but also banning the production of cdjs.

Great answers, I guess that’s all a little obvious but also clarifying for me. Now just waiting for the final ingredients of Rich’s professional opinion

Of course you do that’s why I tagged you! But I’m only vaguely aware of what everyone does here and only familiar with you more recently, though picked up enough to reckon you’re the *real deal*. Rich has just graced us with his wild tales on the road and he’s so DJ that his girlfriend’s a DJ too, which all sticks in my mind, but you and I certainly have much closer taste and I gave your youtube channel a sub a while ago, just had a look at your soundcloud too. Cheers

I'm just giving you a bad time.
I honestly don't really consider myself a "pro" either as most everything I've done has been through accidents of coincidence of being in the right places/knowing the right people and them knowing I had the music... stuff like that...

it's all about the selection

media doesn't matter

not that I've been in a club or rave or free party since 2017, so fuck my opinion

Edit: it's only the nerds with notebooks who pay attention, most people just want to get off their heads and dance, they don't care if you are playing OG vinyl or CD or 96kb mp3

Agree totally
