Unfortunately we'll probably see more stories like this. A few years ago ICANN got greedy with the gTLD programme to "enhance innovation, competition and consumer choice" meaning that they would take big money to make .ninja, .office, and hundreds of others legitimate top level domains. Then there was the proposed sell off of the .org domain to a private enterprise which was only stopped after massive public outcry. ICANN seem to be taking credit for stopping the sale nowadays but I seem to remember they weren't opposed to it at the time.
