Have a go on this catalog/cossrooper, a Rinse show to promote the fantastic four 12 inch with Scratcha DVA, Ill Blu, Roska and D Malice. IIRC, haven't listened to it for years, scratchas on first and he plays some outlying stuff, not just funky, including a Felix da housecat tune.

Was probably a bit harsh on Kode 9 earlier, tbf he does seem genuine in his enthusiasm. His funky inspired tunes at the time though were very dirgey though. But he did know about apple and roska etc quite early on so he had his ear to the ground and was willing to defend funky from all the dubsteppers slagging it off so that was decent of him.

The thing I think with gentrification, more and more, is that the people who complain about it the most are actually the cause of it themselves, and they know it.

Im guilty myself, don't mean to start anything.

But once you start blaming kode9, you might as well blame this board, heron bone, black down etc.

But those 2 bits did just stick out for me with kode9. Bit off, or maybe just actually refreshing in a way cos there's at least some frankness going on.

Also, hyperdub has carefully not engaged at all with its CCRU history, which is fine, I suppose, but also a bit disappointing.

They have a bit. They released a thing of Mark's on some sublabel, Lee Gamble's very much taking cues from them and Kode9's published a few books / pieces in that vein.

i like some of scratcha's older tracks.

things like bullet a go fly, or natty/ganja, or quirky things like the jelly roll ep. hes best at isolated tracks or EPs - anything too big like an album and i dont think he can pull it off (obv not the only producer with this issue).

i heard a little of the newer stuff, and wasnt too impressed, though i was listening casually. seems over produced, like he is trying to do a bit too much. hes not very good at working with singers on the whole - it ends up sounding messy. do love his quirkiness though, that playful, off kilter vibe he had for a minute.

his old rinse show was great. def a highlight of rinse before it became whatever it is now.

Interesting how he's not that talkative. Also kode9 very tired and a bit low energy.

Rashad in the 2nd hour, that was something wasn't it, how Steve basically made rashad into something, I don't think he would've gained much traction here if it wasn't for Steve.

I think 2012-17 were vintage music years and 2018-now have been pretty poor.
