Yesterday I was playing social deduction games on vidcall with some pals, and there was an iffy case where it wasn't clear whether some line of information gathering was fair game or cheap. The way that question got settled was by deferring to what sorts of information could be obtained in in-person social deduction games, which is where all the players (and of course all the games themselves) got their start.
The spirit of the game was being preserved even as the medium had changed—there was a sense of "original" and "imitation".

Yeah I'm not totally sure, it doesn't feel so crazy to me but I don't have a great intuition, have probably only played a dozen games of poker in my life. Watching pro poker videos it does seem like bluffs of this magnitude (having absolutely nothing, and putting that much money on the line) don't really happen perhaps? E.g. compare the math behind the Brunson vid Mvuent linked. I don't have an opinion other than you see the reaction—the other players freak out, either taking their hat off and bowing, or going "That's the weirdest hand I've ever seen in poker."Ive watched the video and I still dont entirely get it. She thought he was bluffing so she called it. Is it because she only called with a jack high? jack is still relatively high no? seems like she registered that garret was trying for the straight, didnt get it and decided to bluff the hand, and from there she decided to roll the dice on the split chance that he had a 7/8 and not jack/queen.

listening some more its seems that its unheard of to call a bluff if you cant assure you'll win the high card with an ace. the commentator says 'if she had an ace, that would make sense.'Yeah I'm not totally sure, it doesn't feel so crazy to me but I don't have a great intuition, have probably only played a dozen games of poker in my life.
