Historically it's been very rare, which I think is the reason that no-one's thought too hard about the system. Party leaders normally resign or get the boot after they lose elections, or occasionally when their party is out of power and showing no signs of regaining it under their leadership. I think we've had 6 serving PMs resign in the last 50 years, it's just that four of them have been since 2016.
