a whole entire style of east african music which deserves its own thread

طرب
طرب - tarab is a key concept in arabic music
& also a whole entire style of east african music https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taarab which deserves its own thread
The emotional orientation of Arab composition is also ‘played out’ during the Arab cultural performance events. As opposed to the formal Western classical concert, the Arab performance leans towards interaction and expressively charged within the musicians and audiences. In the Arab culture, the fusion between music and emotional change symbolized by the Arabic perception of Tarab, which may not have a precise equivalence in Western languages.

For instance, with the physical and emotional appearances on performers can be quite visible, and the Tarab ecstasy is generally approached with an air of discreetness. When it becomes extreme or when publicly presented, the musical emotion can incite social mimicry, if not ethical and religious disapproval. The vision of Tarab is a complex notion that embraces an aesthetic-experiential principal but also links with a dense network of cultural morals, economic associations, and social hierarchies.

this is totally unrelated, Africa via West Germany, but in an odd way reminds me of the clip in the original post... same vibe

big hit on the "alternative disco" scene of the early 80s ( in the UK at least )

Unknown Cases - Ma Sim Ba Bele ( 1983 )

derailed my own thread before it even started, nice one "Bill"

( edit: i even fucked up by originally posting the 88 version, but have corrected my mistake by inserting the proper un-remixed 1983 original above and I've OVbliterated the 88 version which you don't need to hear - way to go "bill" )

anyway, ignore my interruption with what I think was Damo Suzuki's backing band at the time ( and I'm sure some other ex-can guy was involved ) and show us examples of طرب / "mirth" / tarab that match the intensity of the clip in the first post

@sufi has issued an opening salvo in the clip immediately above, can you compete?

Great Tarab Mix, High sound quality | Part 1 | منوعات طربية رائعة بجودة صوت عالية

posting this because the wallpaper on the video resembles the kaleidoscopic patterns I witnessed last Sunday morning after swallowing a handful of the mushrooms @catalog gave me at the last "great northern dissensus meet up"

imagine trying to navigate your way to your bathroom when all you can see is that pattern....

edit :before the patterns took over and I was having a cig and looking out the kitchen window I noticed that there was a tree who I have never noticed before and she performed a special dance for me, and then another tree competed for my attention and, maybe that was when I realised the mushrooms were showing me something... and then my whole field of vision became consumed by the kaleidoscope... and that's why any posts I've made since saturday should be ignored....

mchiriku is the "gangster" taarab, in which you can clearly hear the roots of the singeli we all love today:

met the main dude from this band at Nyege Nyege a few years ago. had a considerably heavier energy about him than any of the us/uk/euro rockstars i've encountered over the years.

just did a search for طرب ( tarab ) and what turns up...

عمار دسكو الدفينه - Ammar Disco Al-Dafna

I can see some of the Tandalty lads down the front strutting their stuff to this, what I can only describe as the "prog fusion" version of the Tandalty "big tune" complete with live horns and incredibly noodling guitar... to my ears this sounds like an Arabic take on Gong...
