In the mid-2000s or so, I began getting turned onto what was called Deep Soul via Dave Godin's amazing comps. So, not the dancefloor burners like some above, but slower, deeper, often coming out of the Southern US. I think the tempo gives these amazing church-educated singers more time to just ... stretch out. I wish I had deeper knowledge here but we start where we stand. I think Bassbeyondreason collects stuff like this.
