it closes when the environment is toxic. it closes when there's a lack of stimulation and we're bored.

gestalt therapy talks about the contact boundary. most of the time maybe we're 20% open.
that sounds about right.

You've got to be careful about bullying some open people they can take it really to heart let it define them they're too sensitive to have defenses. But Stan takes it to such an extreme that anything you say to or about him is like a drop of water in an ocean, it sends the smallest ripple through his sprawling fluid oceanic worldmodel.

It's good to be open when you're young. There are algorithms that describe when you should explore a space and when you should exploit what you've learned through past exploring, which recommend about 1/3 of your total time spent surveying the territory. That's about age 25 for an average male
