Finished the Mathews earlier. There's a post-it in the back from whomever gifted to some previous owner.

I read this a few years ago, & enjoyed it. I recalled it to mind a few months ago, and managed eventually to find this copy. I think you will enjoy it, though perhaps 5% chance you won't.​
Note: all the writers & cultural figures named are definitely real. I think you need to know that. And Oulipo is a genuine literary grouping. (True, really.) Would I lie to you?​

I wonder why the "don't read in a public place" bit

I think they're just playing along with the book. The whole thing's Mathews hanging around in cafes and stuff pretending to be a spy but not really doing anything then actual spies, fascists, etc. take notice and he ends up out of his depth.
