Awesome Welles

Figured he might as well have his own thread. His films, yes (although I've only seen one, Kane), but also his personality.

As far as I'm aware no scandals have emerged to bring him down.

Could he be the greatest American of modern times?

my opinion is that his best film is the magnificent ambersons

and there's no way you can prove that it's not my opinion

He did another in a similar style to F for Fake called Filming Othello that's brilliant too.

I thought The Other Side of the Wind, the unfinished film Netflix eventually released, was great as well. There's a film within the film where he takes the piss out of Antonioni.

The only one I've seen which I thought was properly shit was Mr. Arkadin. It has its moments, but it got a real butchering, even by Welles' standards; The Lady from Shanghai's a mess too, but better overall. The Irish brogue was a misstep though.

I think theres a good case to be made that Touch of Evil is better than Citizen Kane (haven't seen Kane in a while, but love Evil). Also, Third Man is my favorite film, and I suspect Welles had a non-trivial directorial influence on Reed there.

I remember feeling pretty ambivalent about his adaptation of The Trial, which did have an interesting cast.
