Awesome Welles

It's a shame he never got to make his Heart of Darkness adaptation. What little there is of it is absolutely haunting.

Oh dang, an Orson Welles adaptation of that would have been cool. Might that rival Jodorowsky's Dune for the best movie never made?

As far as I'm aware no scandals have emerged to bring him down.

Last night started the book Biskind put together of Welles' taped conversations with Henry Jaglom. In the first one he goes on a rant about how much he hates the Irish, particularly Irish-Americans.

Quite a depressing read, tbh. Funny and interesting moments, but essentially a bloated and crumbling Welles posted up in the corner of a Hollywood restaurant flailing around as the world moves on. Lots of barbs and dubious anecdotes.

Was it this stuff?

'cause that doesn't seem too bad (especially since, before slavery was abolished, some considered us to be more worthless than slaves so we'd come up a bit by that time (while many of us were unfortunately racist, too))
It's actually kind of funny how some american whites even disliked other american white ethnicities back then. It must have been tiring with so much hate to go around back then.
It's like so old school it's almost kind of funny and endearing in a way unlike how I feel about racism or antisemitism although I'd probably feel differently about it back then.

Yeah, that's it. And no, it's not too bad. I think he was hamming it up to prod Jaglom. A lot of the stories he tells and opinions he offers feel as though he's just saying things for effect and bullshitting his way through lunch. There's a clip on Dick Cavett where he talks about meeting Hitler, which I've never entirely believed.
