And this parallels how (metaphorically) colorful men of the era could be

Tiki drinks are flamboyant, gay. Not muted, repressed

Also I think it's interesting that these Polynesian fantasies are predicated on / romanticizations of the kinds of experiences Americans in the Pacific had, which are specifically in-between periods, periods of waiting

There is a kind of timelessness, and out-of-timeness, to these moments. Like in Gray Flannel Suit, the protagonist (Gregory Peck) has had this out-of-time war romance with Maria, in Italy. They're both somehow half-dead: he expects to die imminently in combat, and she has lost both her parents to the war, and wonders if she'll be next. They have a romance that is out of the usual chronology of their lives; it's bracketed by his service, by his deployment. There are no consequences, no long-term plan—they find a temporary haven in each other

And the exotic places that the music evokes isn't a particular place, it's an impossible amalgam. Rum drinks from the Caribbean, Latin jazz, Incan pan pipes, Hawaiian leis, Maori tiki idols.

When the vet steps into such a space they leave time and space. They escape into a fantasy that is timeless and placeless.

Which goes with the notion of Bali Hai. Which in Michener's invention is this hazy mirage of an island that you can never reach, that you're always trying to approach. A Micronesian Eden.

every now and then i go into some kind of 'tiki' themed thing and i never have any idea what it is
Wym? It's tiki. Tiki torches and tiki idols and tropical drinks and flower necklaces

Don't Brits have some equivalent of this? Romanticizations of their Pacific colonial subjects?

how do you have so many fucking anecdotes? you've posted here almost 7000 times and i'd say that you average ~2 new anecdotes per post. so that means you've shared ~14,000 anecdotes about pyscho exes, industrial music nonces, drug related debauchery, martial arts, and so on in your three years here. for reference i've probably got about 50 anecdotes, total.
