(Actually yesterday)

Why is it called 'boxing day'?

The name comes from a time during Queen Victoria's reign when the rich used to box up gifts to give to the poor.

Boxing Day was traditionally a day off for servants - a day when they received a special Christmas box from their masters.

The servants would also go home on Boxing Day to give Christmas boxes to their families.

I am ill at the moment, have been since last Thursday (maybe COVID?)

WHY, WHEN I'M ILL, DO I ALWAYS FEEL WORSE AT NIGHT?
"Research suggests that your body’s circadian rhythms—as well as some other factors—can exacerbate your symptoms after sundown.

Along with regulating your sleep, your body’s circadian clocks help manage your immune system, says Michael Smolensky, a biological rhythm researcher and adjunct professor of biomedical engineering at the University of Texas. “When the immune system is activated”—like when you’re sick with the common cold—“its infection-fighting cells release a variety of chemicals, some of which induce inflammation in the infected tissues,” he explains.

This immune system activity helps kill or clear away the microorganisms that are making you ill. But the resulting inflammation causes or contributes to many of your symptoms—including fever, congestion or sore throat. Smolensky says that this immune system activity and the inflammation it produces is not constant, but instead is “highly circadian rhythmic.” As a result, “you tend to experience symptoms as most severe when your immune system kicks into highest gear, which is normally at night during sleep.”

They repair the roads at night.

Among adults with tertiary-level education (such as university graduates), literacy proficiency fell in 13 countries and only increased in Finland, while nearly all countries and economies experienced declines in literacy proficiency among adults with below upper secondary education. Singapore and the US had the biggest inequalities in both literacy and numeracy.

“Thirty per cent of Americans read at a level that you would expect from a 10-year-old child,” Andreas Schleicher, director for education and skills at the OECD, told me — referring to the proportion of people in the US who scored level 1 or below in literacy. “It is actually hard to imagine — that every third person you meet on the street has difficulties reading even simple things.”

I had whole classrooms full of students that couldn't name a single country outside of America besides Mexico

I learned about this in a woman's profile on Hinge

The Local Void

A vast, empty region of space that's at least 150 million light-years across, but could be as large as 300 million light-years. It's located next to the Local Group and is made up of three sectors connected by wispy filaments.

Apparently though they've found 5 galaxies in it already, which doesn't sound very 'void' to me 😠

Now find out the proportion of people whose IQ is equivalent to a bright 10 year old's!
