The shiny people

it's not so bad finding a park to sleep in. it's better if you happen to have a tent. i've had some profound, great times being totally exhausted and walking out of cities searching for somewhere to sleep. it was a good time to sing to yourself. and you can pretend you're kerouac.

This has been me the last couple weeks. If you find a decent spot where you can get a decent kip it's actually not that bad. People call it wild camping, or if you've got no tent, cowboy camping. It's all about finding your good spot

that is really annoying to get that far and get stuck at the airport. in a lot of places you can get a hotel room near the airport for $100 or so - no idea if that's the case for turin. or if you have $100
I'm debating. There's a 70euro hotel in the airport but you have to buy your own sheets and you get a little sleepcubicle

zero budget travelling is the best way really. or idk, what do i want to say. i guess i want to say that i did a lot of it and it was essentially brilliant. there's a reason pilgrimages have been a part of religious experience. sadhus and so on. the deprivation puts you in a different state of mind. something about how you have to spend your time thinking about how to get the basics. rather than being a normal tourist and thinking about which sites to visit to fill your day. these are profound experiences i think. i'd rather be where you are sus than in an office in midtown where i actually am

oh yeah but there are also moments shivering in a dark tent which are like staring into an abyss where you question every decision you've ever made, can't forget that

Love both countries but there's something about Spain that just does it that bit more for me
Can ya expand? Quite curious as I prefer Spain but am building the case.

Galicia seems lovely but one requirement is an international airport within two hours drive. Zaragoza and Barcelona have that and basically nowhere else in Spain but Madrid

We like Umbria because very similar culturally and landscape wise to Tuscany but without the name brand recognition that drives up tourism and sticker prices

Ha if only I could trick a bank into giving me a card. No such luck. And rightly so. Fiscal responsibility is def not my middle name. Am down to the last few notes.
Did you just skip out on a bunch of loans? I always wondered how that worked. I guess if you're itinerant and don't pickup your phone what can they do

The main thing is I need to get somewhere where I can keep working on writing. Need to get my daily reps in. Need to hit my daily word count. Can't quit on the dream even if I'm not a shiny chosen treasured spontaneous sunkissed gods own child

Yeah for my tastes Spain is everything I want from Europe. Fave food. Gorgeous, hazy evenings. The attitude and approach to life. People come first. Where Italy let's it all hang out, Spain just gives you a little taste. It's got that mystery to it, but with the hidden intensity just under the surface. Find that shit so inspiring. It's like looking into some mesmeric eyes. Tantalizing, sensuous. Italy is more voluptuous. Looking at the great Roman architecture etc. I love the daftness of Italy tho, Roberto Benigni style shit can be fucking hilarious. Spain feels a bit drier in its humor. I tend to lean more in that direction

My bank offered me some buy now pay later shit just before I flew to America. Still haven't paid later 🫠 it's only a couple of grand but still fkn stupid. But before that I never had a good credit score anyway. Always late to pay shit back and going overdrawn. Basically the lackadaisical type of person all those predatory fines are designed to exploit

You can do that anywhere, but yeah, can see the draw of a little spot of your own. Feels like that's what all the greats did innit. Or a lot of them anyway

How long have you been on the road Patty? Do you document it in any way or do you embrace the ephemerality?

Getting on for 6 weeks. Had decent savings in the beginning but was acting too careless, as I tend to do. Could easily have stretched it out until now if I'd been more frugal. But I honestly fucking hate hostels now. Too old for that shit. Past mid 30s it's like what are you doing. In my 20s they were the absolute shit tho. Have been writing to myself in my phone's notes app but then I always delete everything. Tbh I never think to write for show. I like the living of it all. Being the story instead of writing the story. That might just be a cop out though because there's so many things that have happened that would be great to revisit in written form

Like being shot at while trying to sleep under an olive tree just outside of Eleusis a few weeks ago. The whole lead up and mise en scene was just right out of some film. Managed to escape unscathed 💪🏻

Were you initiated into the Mysteries then

It was like coming home being there, seriously. That whole mystery school story is exactly my shit. Spent 4-5 hours at the site early on in the trip. Was a major reason to come to Greece. The getting shot at was the 3rd visit, just passing by on the way to Nafplio

I was talking mostly about the types of people you see play acting bohemian lifestyles in NYC, and fancy Europeans on fancy holidays in expensive resorts n such. People who have big boats n all that shit. Their existence is generally pretty smooth unless something fucks it up but they generally have plenty of safeguards and several pokers in several fires to protect in case one falls through. Def not an existence I would ever aspire to. The older I get the more repulsive that world looks to me. Celebs and the rest of it. Success even. I'd never want to reach it. Not wealth wise. It's corrosive. Root of all evil. Even just having money to throw around. Rots you from the inside out

I watched this whole thing when it was uploaded about a month ago. They just drive around in an expensive car, go to the gym, then drive around in an expensive boat. They don't really seem to do anything, or even have any sort of internal world. There's no sense of any of them even particularly liking one another or genuinely communicating. An endless advert with no discernible product beyond the appearance of a lifestyle. Networking as entertainment.

I forget if the shiny people was mine or Lukas concept but I think of it often

It was Luke that made the thread, so I assume he came up with it.
