Hmm. LFO'd bass just sounds a bit silly especially when taken to cartoonish excess. Wheras deep sub allows a lot more melodic/rhyhmic detail to float on top, whilst still being crushingly heavy in a club environment.

Loving that Dubsta Shackleton mix at the moment. His drum programming is emblematic of how kinetic post-halfstep can be when its not trapped in wobbly minimalism.

of course! and for me, theres nothing wrong with party bangers with or without substance. but for one reason or another on the most part they just turn me cold

Very interesting interview, wish that there were more of these around - thanks, BD. The "About the Town" reports were quality as well, reminded me how much I miss reading Gutta's weekly summaries and impressions. And yeah, without question, Shackleton's mix by dubsta was one of my personal faves of 2006, such great percussion programming from an artist with vision and personality.

Have another listen to third choice by vex'd or loefah's Mud. Perfectly executed, subtle, clean sub wobble.

i also like the sort of quite gentle wobble on the likes of Paradise Dub by Random Trio and the new MRK1 12". not in your face, not continuous, just leading the swing gently around the drums. im really quite feelin the new MRK1, suprisingly funky and subtle. quite disappointed by that slew of vinyl just into boomkat today, some very mediocre material imo, and my least favourite piece of Pinch wax thus far Voodoo is sick though... while hardly groundbreaking it still has that quality which lifts it above. my cash is going on the new loco dice instead methinks (and mebbes that wighnomy bros)

I'm with you man, that tune is dirt. Wobble that compliments the rest of the tune rather than dominates

I was disappointed with the pinch and juju thing too.. the original doesn't do much for me and pinch's remix doesn't change much. Having said that though the last two things by both those guys are so sick - iroku by juju I wasn't expecting at all, cool weird vibes. He's obviously been listening to a lot of mala tunes. and the lighthouse dub remix by pinch is awesome!

yeh man iroko is a really sick tune. i rate his first 12 too, and I Space Dub i think is absolutely incredible, i love it. its weird though cos a lot of his stuff i dont really rate that much at all. but he has the potential to make wonderful stuff evidently

and pinch i have a lot of faith in, i think his album might be quite breathtaking, thats what my bones tell me anyways! i need to get my expectations down though. i hope that remix of Answer makes it out, it was planned to but that was a long time ago...

Edit- oh yeah found it on Boomkat. It sounds waaay better than most tracks in this style, as Pinch's superior engineering skills give it a lush hi-tech sheen. But I think most would agree its not really the direction we'd like him to be heading in.

yep it was much better,old track now though.
Ive heard bits and pieces from new tracks by pinch and they are fantastic, if they're anything to go by it seems hopeful, esp in the light of skream's record.
atm for me the juju and the new hotflush shackleton are the ones tho, exciting.

yeah that lighthouse remix is sick. not feeling the juju stuff at all, not doing anything new to my ears...

i have high hopes for pinch , cyrus,blackdown , appleblim,loe,mala,coki,burial,kodes,the bug,vex'd,d1 and geiom bringin the fresh sounds[that would be my ideal line up for a night ...all that lot b2b ha ). agreed on third choice ... such a sick tune! loefah remix with original due on ital very soon.

its just that fucking cheap plastic sounding lfo wobble that does nothing for me. its all over the weaker, run of the mill tracks. they open up the cutoff which makes it alot more prominent at low volumes but in a club its just not needed because the lower, cleaner sub sounds jump out a hell of alot as it is...

been a bit let down by fwd as of late, though i reckon pinch and distance on the 15th will be sick!

well dmz in Leeds was fun.

Remarc was just fantastically good and enjoyable. His drums are just superb. i liked to pretend when i was dancing that there really was a human drummer playing those lightening fast edited drums...

Youngsta was awesome, reaassured me after loosing faith in him slightly (seeearlier on), he played a beast of a set for the last hour or so. Considering he seemed to have been smoking spliffs pretty much constantly all night i am amazied he can que his mixes with such presuicion at 4am! No sign of Task.

Benga b2b hatcha was a little boring to be honest. The occasional banger but it was just too samey...

Skream b2b Hijack was good on the upbeat elastic tip.

Loefah b2b mala same as always (ie wicked).

Missed MRK1 as was watching Remarc. Dunno if Chef actually played in the end? Or maybe i arrived too late...

Not enough Pokes tho, and i dont think Crazy D should have had any reverb on his mic; whilst Pokes in his Dub-style suits it Crazy with his garage chat does not.

Good crowd, good vibes and a good soundsystem. Found the top-end a bit pieceing at times tho.

i believe they actually used the old iration rig, not their awesome upgraded one. the old one always suffered from too much treble and distortion.

i was going to go, but was over the (driving) limit by 10.30, so sacked it off. my ears are blessing me.

i heard they were using some new mid / top drivers, rather than the old one.

with plugs in, it sounded incredible. ruffage by loefah was especially clean and clear.
