anyone heard the zion i and the grouch album? i had high hopes for it based on the songs i heard which combined good lyrics with hyphy-ish production but theres still a lot of tracks which are your regular underground type of thing. would have liked them to do an entire album in the hyphy vein.

It doesn't matter. In 1999, indie labels .. were all still going strong and releasing classic underground hip hop...underground hip hop heads/backpackers wouldn't have been listening then. One.

So you think backpackers have taken an interest in mainstream rap because the indie scene is failing? That's interesting. I'm really interested as to the morale and energy in that scene, I dont imagine it's good. Istopped paying attention years ago.

In the late 90s, the figureheads of indie rap were say, el-p+fam, living legends, project blowed, solesides/quannum, anticon, rhymesayers. 10 years later, are there any new crews with the energy and following that those acts once had?

All about pride and egos
All the backpackers I go to college with all bang on about that whole Stones Throw camp.

One guy even had the audacity to say "I only listen to REAL urban music... like MF Doom."

MF Doom blows my mind. His chest for all the wordplay and puns and what not, but in terms of what seems to be a repeated criticism of rapper's chatting wack shit I don't see the difference between Young Jeezy talking about coke-dealing, E-40 talking about popping pills and going Evil Kaneevel mode in his car, Cam'ron talking about the ice 'round his neck, and MF Doom talking about nintendo and cartoons he likes.

It almost seems to me that the guys rapping about shotting blow and living lives of excess at least have a little bit of cultural and social depth to them.

Making an album about Adult Swim cartoons though?

That's not what I mean....

Nope, they're PLENTY of those. I was saying that it's because cats like Lil' Wayne have EVOLVED as artists and not just rappers so that people who are into more well rounded music can appreciate his talent now, as to when it was only 2 years after their favorite emcees couldn't get on the radio anymore, they wouldn't have listened anyways...largely out of spite, but also because the indie scene was FRESH and in it's seminal/early stages. I could pretty much listen to NOTHING but indie shit because the scene is that diverse and massive...deep with great artists and music from every genre of hip hop that you can imagine...

Thing is, that I'm 31 now and it's boring as hell (as well as narrowminded and ignorant) to simply discount music because it's mainstream, or from down South, or from out West, etc. It's equally stupid to think that EVERYTHING is good just because it's indie (wack shit is wack shit, regardless of label...you can keep both your Rick Ross AND Tech N9ne CD's, thank you).

I have an aesthetic to my music that I personally PREFER (which I will readily admit), but that doesn't stop me from at least listening to or trying other music. I've mellowed out at lot with age. LOL. One.

In the XXL ITSELF

Where's the rest of that article?

The FULL article was printed in the last XXL with Jay-Z on it, that was just an excerpt. Kris Ex is an excellent writer, one of my influences going back to his early days at The Source when it was the greatest hip hop magazine/publication in existence (1988-1998). One.

he is a good writer.

found that piece a bit inconclusive in XXL though. it starts off really well but he doesnt come to any real hardline conclusion or opinion at all. it just kinda peters out, like he was almost scared to really say what he wanted to.

that's the point i'm making re that piece. it's not very good. otherwise he can be good. occasionally a bit weird tho

Being that Kris Ex is pretty fond of the drugs himself, he wasn't going to make a hard stand on coke or cocaine rap (like I would for example, given that I've consciously decided never to smoke or even drink in my 31 years on this Earth due to my early years growing up in the crack era where humans were walking around like zombies and they broke into your house to rob it...oftentimes while you were STILL THERE and robbed elderly people for crack money on the street). I didn't really expect him too, either...that's not what he does. He is an excellent writer, though Stelfox...I have piles of articles dating back to the early 90's to prove it. One.

Well, let's see....

Game sold 358,000+ of Doctor's Advocate, Akon's Konvicted moved around 250,000 and Fat Joe moved 60,000 so I was right about that. Jay-Z's album was projected to moved between 800,000- 850,000 the first week a few days ago (which would shatter the 580,000 that T.I. opened at) and the Clipse LP drops the 28th.

The Jay-Z album clearly alienates younger listeners, but it doesn't matter because he marketed to the right people. Hopefully Nas' "Hip Hop Is Dead" can open huge and Def Jam will pull out all the stops for Nas as well. I start my blog on January 1st and I'm still going through names...so far poisonousparagraphs.blogspot.com is FAR in the lead...way down at #10 is hiphopismyantidrug.blogspot.com...I'll keep you all posted (like you care! LOL)

Yep...that 750,000-800,000 units he's supposed to move in his first week (Timberlake numbers) completely backs that statement up...wait until Nas drops...it's gonna be crazy. One.

Oh you know what I mean. He's all going on about a 'movement' and how hiphop needs 'events' and all he can come up with is the same old shit. He's holding onto a diamond that's lost its shine, he's got no new ideas and 800,000 morons can be wrong. And I like Jay-Z, knowhaumsayin?

Here are Jay-Z's official first week numbers:

KINGDOM COME

Snoop moved 274,000+ to open and Game sold another 160,000+ this week to bring him to Gold sales overall (500,000 units sold). The Clipse "Hell Hath No Fury" went on sale today. I'm guessing it moves between 300,000-350,000 to open. We'll see. The song QB True G with Nas f/Game just leak a few hours ago and it should be available online...check it out.
