whatever happened to this charming man? how soon is now to know if he ever paid for what he did? this is the one that ate a nice dutch girl in paris, 1981. i don't know, i just read the story in a fashion magazine, of all places, truly the gutter of popular culture. a little googling turns up that

within fifteen months of hospitalization his influential father secured his release... By then, Sagawa life had become a national celebrity. He has writen four books and writes a weekly column for a japanese tabloid. He often appears on television

he got thru on a legal loophole, was put in an asylum in France then got thru on a loophole again and returned to Japan where he got out fairly quickly.
the whole case and the story are discussed by Colin Wilson in this totally unpleasant book with contributions from some right unsavory characters http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apocalypse_Culture_II it's partly interesting, partly stomach churning.
Not sure about the claim that his father got him released though.

Psychopathology is a very difficult thing, i was talking about this subject with a criminal psychologist who specialises in psychotic cases the other day, since there is literally no cure, some of these guys, people who have often commited brutal crimes get let back into society, the trick is to help them unlearn some of the brick wall behaviour that put these guys into these patterns with their drives and choices, also to get them to understand, more like a maths equation rather than an emotion, the problems with say raping people etc ..

but it's strange she told me about seeing a guy, who she had treated onthe tube, dressed fashionably etc, and knowing that if attempted to get into 'normal behaviour' there would be danger. Knowing that thats the way she felt and being aware of the problems with it, and the classification of these crimes and illnesses, it seems like alot to live with.

i skimmed through that once, what a laugh. don't remember the sagawa bit, though.

anyway it's that mechanical isn't it, the way desire works. like a watch you can take a bad piece out and throw in another one! what a depressing thought. this is the way deprogramming works, doesen't it, where you unearth a 'bad ' order, give the counter-order and then you're free to put something else in its place? how anyone can get to the 'bad' order is beyond me.

but no matter how successfully rehabilitated people will shun you forever, you'll have to excuse yourself forever. that's why the sagawa case is so mind boggling if true, that the social stigma isn't there and the criminal is unrepentant, even proud! and it makes sense, actually, if what you've done is part of who you are, of what a group of people is, a line that traces the limits of normality, what is the point of erasing it? give the man a slot on television!
