amazing game. in those types of games it doesn't matter who wins or loses really- in fact, a tie would have been a fair result.

an interesting possibility if flintoff's fit would be to still go into the next match with only 2 front line seamers, with flintoff being one of them (i guess broad would be the logical choice to make way for him?), and medium pacers making up the rest of the seam bowling. given how effective medium pacers tend to be in ODIs and especially in this series, this could be a good tactic for england.

but i think it's more likely that mascerenhas will make way for flintoff.

i think to be really good at ODIs in the future, though, england might need two front line spinners.

That was an amazing game. I'd almost forgot about cricket this summer. Loads of amazing moments. Dimitri Mascarenhas (I always assumed he was Greek or something) made Alan Lamb's 24 off one over look pedestrian. He was just spooning them over by the end.
There was one Sachin cover drive hit from down the leg side which was phenomenal. Then Monty's catch toward the end was almost forgotten in all the excitement. Pietersen's misfield, which should have been a single but went for four, might have made all the difference...

it would be nice wouldn't it? i'm sure it'll happen in the next few years. as it is, england are a little stuck in ODIs on turning wickets when they've only got panesar.

what's so nice about this england side i think is the lack of reliance on pietersen ( a good thing too, given his current form...). my heart no longer sinks when he gets out, because england bat so low down now.

in fact, this england team is so good that it does beg the question why, a year ago, duncan fletcher insisted on having the likes of yardy and dalrymple in the team

that was an awesome odi series, but i wish there'd beeen another test.

i'm a bit confused about sri lanka, we've got 5 odi's in october, and then 3 tests in december... why the long break? and come on us knocking out the aussies!!

Two things, one funny, one sad

Funny: That England invented 20twenty (or twenty20. Whatever) three years ago and are already miles behind everyone else.

Sad: That this tournament may be the last time we see Flintoff for England. He's clearly not right. That's the third time he's "come back" from major surgery on the same ankle, and if this had've been a fifty50 tournament, he wouldn't have played.

god i hope sri lanka beat australia today.

it's funny how england seem to to take longer than everyone else to make the switch between forms of the game- at the start of one day international series they generally play like they're in tests, and in the twenty20 cup they were in ODI mode, going steadily at about 6 an over.

interesting though that we really lost all those games because of fuck-ups by the more established england players- pietersen, collingwood, flintoff getting out cheaply. the twenty20 'specialists' and newer players to the team generally did pretty well. and scofield's is a heartwarming story innit?

Saw some stats yesterday which show England have the worst record of anyone (Zimbabwe and Bangladesh included) in 20/20. If this is the future of cricket, can we have the past back please?

yeah the ODI side is looking good innit- it's weird the way that england are now making look everything so simple, whereas under duncan fletcher the steps that needed to be taken to make england a decent ODI side seemed to be completely mysterious...now they just follow the script of having bowlers bowl to their fields while conceding hardly any wides, bat down to 9, and don't give away any easy singles... if you do all those three then you're going to be a match for anyone, aren't you? (except australia!)


also, what are people's thoughts on ramprakash's possible return to the test team?

So, obviously this test has been rubbish until the final session of the fourth day, but, it must be said, props to Vetorri for declaring when the game wasn't safe, setting up the final day for some interesting cricket. England would never have done that; they'd have aimed to bat out the first session, then drop the over rate when we got round to bowling. Hats off. Especially if England now win.

Blame Sidebottom. If he hadn't bowled so well the game would've drifted off into a draw.

as Peter Moores would no doubt have it, though, england can take some positives from the match, notably that we've probably seen the last of harmison in international cricket. if broad gets in as replacement, it'll be nice to have a strike bowler who actually likes playing cricket.
