Another in an apparently continuing series of texture-matched, heavily-layered mixes. This one was done very quickly: tracks picked, sequenced, meshed, tweaked in one evening. Intentionally threw in some probably Dissesnsus-dissmissed pop acts (Radiohead, Wilco, Dirty Three, et al) instead of going more predictably avant/ambient; but also a lot of the usual staples in my mixing diet (Meters, Arthur Russell, Can, Reich, Eno). I guess if you listened via speakers without paying a lot of attention, a sort of "spine" of "songs" (as contrasted with "pieces") stand out, so that it can listened to like an unmixed pop collection. But with headphones, or in the dark, or with any real attention paid, I hope the lines between the songs and the pieces get blurred a little, so that ambient/composed becomes fused, texture/melody become enmeshed, rhythm/flow coalesce.
Look for a mix into which a lot more effort went via Droid+Slug's ambitious, international, fortnightly 'Blogariddims' project, on 11 September. It'll likely be guest-blogged on Weareie blog, but it'll download to you automatically if you sign up for the B'riddims podcast, which I'd recommend. Great stuff so far, and what's coming looks just as top-shelf.
