You should just read ulysses start to finish. Those letters are the worst of him, but the only bit similar to them in the whole of ulysses are the very last 100 pages.
I started Ulysses a couple of times, liked parts, but it defeated me and now I've just decided I hate him and can do without it in my life. Dubliners and Portrait I've read and they have their moments but nah

I just remember seeing a bit of a production of Godot on late night telly sometime in the 90s and I couldn't make head nor tail of it.

Have you read Gus' Stoner Godot?

Is that why Gus keeps going on about "stoner modernism" in the Prynne thread? I've got no idea what it is, or even if it's actually a real thing.

It's pretty good, imo. Some of it is really dull though. There were sections I really had to slog through. Much prefer Beckett.

I read about half of it too but the problem is you get bored, try and pick it up again 5 years later, start from the beginning cos you've forgotten it all, get bored again, see a picture of his horrible peedo face on the internet and decide life's too short.

I think I read it over about a year or so, maybe just under. There were periods where I really couldn't be bothered and just read other things. I was in the Circe episode in Nighttown for ages.

I remember reading someone laying into, I think, DeLillo and "postmodernism" claiming it was nothing but lists, but Joyce is full of lists and they're much more irritating than DeLillo's. There are huge lists of trees and nobles and all sorts in the Cyclops episode. Bored me to tears. Look at this shit.
