I think it was more to protect your feet and ankles. The tech's probably come on a bit since then though as I don't remember getting heel bruises or anything in Nikes. You do get stuff like triple-stitched toe caps to withstand the griptape though.wasnt the idea more padding to take abuse from the grip tape on?
Those yellow ones are ok, I much prefer them to those Nikes above... to be honest I find almost all trainers too busy and ugly. Same like watches actually I'm always surprised at how overly fussy and heavy - basically tacky - really expensive watches often look.I had some terrible shoes back in the day; Adio Bam V2s and bright yellow Nike hi tops being the worst.

I prefer the yellow Nikes to the blue and grey ones a couple of posts above which I think are also Nike although I can't see the swoosh.The yellow ones are the Nikes.
