why do people cross their legs when they sit down?

CHAOTROPIC

My old (80!) amazing (blind!) osteopath claimed that the lack of this kind of squatting position was the reason for the ubiquity of hip replacements in the West. A lack of lateral rotational movement in the hips wears the joints unevenly, making them oval over time, causing pain & damage. You can stop it by sitting like this for a few minutes every day, letting the joints wear more evenly.

Squat & shit. That's the way.

Go to Asia & watch even the most wrinkled prunelike relics squatting smoothly & evenly on their haunches for long periods & wonder how many people in the West of a similar age could manage anything remotely similar.*

*I'm not advocating watching people while they're shitting

I refuse to believe that picture.

I can sit exactly like him except with my heels off the ground, or with flat feet but knees pointing almot straight up near my armpits.

Do anyone's ankles bend as much as the guy in the drawing really?

Sick Boy

All about pride and egos
2. In order to counter the guy-whose-dick-must-be-so-large-that-he-can-barely-keep-his-thighs-together style of sitting that remains so popular amongst real manly types.

Looks like you are going to have to clarify here mate.
