Some of them are, some aren't. Some have those 16 hi hats and oh so predictable Southern drum rolls. Those are Hip Hop. Some are different enough from the Hip Hop that inspires it to be Grime.
And how can Kate Nash be on more Grime albums this year than 99% of Grime artists?
Major label Grime is creatively bankrupt. I was watching an incredibly interesting documentary tonight on BBC about the british Soul scene. And listening to the stories of 40 and 50 year old mean talking about the british music industry, it was amazing that it is still so identical today. The british record industry has not changed in 30 years when it comes to predominantly black music. It was really eye opening.
Soul Britannia? Yeah, it's a great show. Depressing as all hell when they're talking about preference given to American artists, etc; as you said, nothing's changed.
It's amazing to me to think of the parallels between the current grime scene and like two-tone and shit back in the day as well, or the invention of Lover's Rock etc. I don't know why I'd never made the connection before today.
As an aside, I saw "The Real Thing" live late last year- the Liverpool band featured on the programme. Amazing stuff, really; the content was way ahead of it's time aside from the more commercial singles, like.
Well worth checking out, I'd say, if you can get the chance. I'm sure they're pretty easy to find online.

There's a great tale about that with my mate Andrea walking down Brixton High St and a guy coming up and asking her what music she liked ( she looked punk ) and she's like 'what?' and he's like, what sort of music do you like, soul or lover's rock?
There was a time when for a certain type of peeps there WERE only two types of music, and those were them...and god bless em for it.
And the all knowing BBC has to put David Bowie and Mick Hucknall [!] at the center of the 'Soul Universe' LOL!

Mick Hucknall? Wow.
I sincerely wish I WAS joking! Apparently Simply Red had a profound effect on spreading the word of 'Soul Music' in 'Thatcher's Britain'.Or some such S**T.
Believe?!!?
