Locomotion: Artists' film and the railway

Friday 16 November 2007

In 1895 the Lumière brothers recorded the arrival of a train into La Ciotat station, bringing with it the beginnings of cinema. From here on, film and the railway have shared the same frame. Like trains, film gracefully mechanises space and time, carrying us simultaneously away from one place and towards another.

Conceptualising the railway as a transcendental timeline, capable of moving us though undiscovered territories, this event plays host to the spirit of experimentation and the avant-garde. Chris Watson's (Touch) new multi-channel surround sound installation Ghost Train opens the evening with an acoustic railroad journey traversing Mexico from Pacific to Atlantic. Resonating through the vast foyer of the library on a 12 channel speaker system, the audience are invited to wander the space and immerse themselves in Watson's exquisitely crafted field recordings. A member of the experimental music group Cabaret Voltaire, Watson is now know for his acclaimed work as a sound recordist with a particular passion for capturing wildlife, habitats and atmospheres.

Filmmaker Guy Sherwin and percussionist Paul Hession will collaborate on a unique improvised performance, made especially for the occasion. Through the live manipulation of multiple 16mm projectors Sherwin choreographs filmic time with sublime deftness. He will re-shape and combine material from his extensive train films series, a theme which has preoccupied him for over 30 years. Hession, who is renowned for his total improvisations and torrential polyrhythmical style, will reciprocate with a spontaneous musical accompaniment.
