I caught up with old friend and Border Community artist Avus last year who kindly took time out from touring Japan to answer some questions for smugpolice.

What are your influences?
Mainly acid house stuff, I could name hundreds of other producers but mainly its just anything with a rough analogue simplicity to it.

What do you think of the current music scene?
In the dance music side of things its pretty twisted at the moment. There are too many coked up label bosses playing safe because its all pretty unstable with the rise of downloading and the fall of vinyl. If they didn't play so safe maybe there would be more people excited and buying the records. Generally there are a lot of interesting things happening in music.

What is your favourite drug and why?
It may sound boring but Diet Coke and crisps is my vice. It makes good studio fuel!

Can you recommend any good films and/or books?
I love my Manga and I just saw some of the Japanese version of Kokaku Kidotai which was written by the guy that wrote Ghost In The Shell. It's being released next year with an English dub and I would recommend anyone to watch it cos it looks amazing.

How do you fill your day when you're not involved in music?
I work! I prefer music to be something I can enjoy without any pressure to pay the bills so I'm happy to have a career at the same time. It also allows me the entertainment of managing a double life, one well within a normal life and one that shifts outside!

Who are your heroes?
Music wise it tends to be anyone who did something that pushed things up to the next level like Derrick May, Kraftwerk, Ron Hardy, Hendrix or Pete Townsend. Generally I also like sports heroes who pushed things up to and beyond the edge and enjoyed doing it like Sterling Moss or James Hunt.

What was the last album/single you bought or downloaded?
Well I didn't pay for it but I got my copy of 'The Idiots Are Winning' by James Holden recently and that's been getting the most play in the car.

What was the last item you consumed?
As I write this I'm on the plane back from a tour of Japan so I have consumed some pretty weird stuff, most of which was a mystery to me. I drew the line at raw horse meat.

Where is your hometown and how would you describe it?
At the moment I live in Northampton. It's a bit of a shit hole but I have good friends here and there is enough action to be found on a Friday night to make it a lesser evil than having to live near where I work in Milton Keynes.

Apparently the world is going to end soon. What do you want to accomplish before this happens?
I'm quite content to continue hanging out with my mates and listening to loud music until it's all over :)
