Call yourself an Englishman? It's the feast day of St Hilary, the Bishop of Poitiers, as well as the beginning of term in the older Law Courts (Hilary Term). Tomorrow we hunt the Mallard. Then I review your manuscript. Shall I make corrections?

Yeah, but you don't have any good Feast Days in NZ, do you? That's the great advantage of this crackpot little island: we have a calendar brimming with feasts and festivals and traditions. I'm going to celebrate all of them this year. It's going to be fun. Today it's St Hilary. I only heard of him 2 hours ago. But there you go. Are you looking forward to St. Wulfstan's Day? It's next Monday.

So presumably this is why it's called Hilary term at Oxford? Always wondered about that - though obviously not enough to actually find out about it. The other ones are Michaelmass and something I forget.

It's St Wulfstan's Day!

They'll be going crazy in Worcester, feasting and fighting and things.

St Agnes' Eve! Wahey!

And tomorrow, it's St Agnes' Day! Super.

Agnes was a 13 yr old girl who was killed because she chose to dedicate her life to Christ by refusing marriage. We therefore choose to celebrate this with love divinations. John Keats wrote a poem about today, remember?

They told her how, upon St. Agnes’ Eve,
Young virgins might have visions of delight,
And soft adorings from their loves receive
Upon the honey’d middle of the night,
If ceremonies due they did aright;
As, supperless to bed they must retire,
And couch supine their beauties, lily white;
Nor look behind, nor sideways, but require
Of Heaven with upward eyes for all that they desire.

No peeking, Craner!

That probably happens in Worcester every night.

Amazingly enough, there's a Catholic saint who is the patron of people mocked for excessive piety. Can't remember her name, but what a great saint!
