KODE 9

Kode 9 aka Steve Goodman is the renaissance man of UK dance culture. An author, label owner, producer, DJ and sound artist, Kode 9 is genetically a junglist, but fell in love with the swing and flex of 2-step garage via London’s pirate radio scene in the late 90’s. Studying as part of the pivotal Cybernetic Culture Research Unit alongside Kodwo Eshun and Sadie Plant laid the theoretical groundwork for his Hyperdub label set up in 2004, which has since released music one of the most critically acclaimed albums of a generation with Burial’s self titled debut, and followup ‘Untrue’. Steve is a regular fixture at seminal clubnight FWD>> and spreads the Hyperdub virus across the world with DJ sets on every continent. Where Kode 9 goes, others follow.

ZOMBY

Zomby took 2008 by storm with a slew of releases which defined a new angle of dubstep called ‘wonky’. Heavily influenced by the spirit and aesthetic of hardcore rave, from ‘Shut Up And Dance’ to Steve Gurley and far beyond, his neon-hued and psychedelically charged rave riddims have created an enthralling memory of the future for UK bass music. He will be performing a ‘Where Were U in ’92?’ set for Futuresonic, breaking down and reforming bass music with elements of dubstep, breakbeat hardcore and piano rave in his inimitable style. This is also Zomby’s Manchester debut and a rare opportunity to witness one of the brightest talents from these shores in operation.

ACTRESS

Werk Discs head and prodigous talent Actress aka Darren Cunningham is a tireless underground lynchpin revered by music heads across the country. His label has given the world albums from Lukid, Disrupt and Zomby while his own celebrated productions absorb disparate elements from Detroit house to 80’s Electro Soul and London’s soundsystem culture into a Bass weighted future fusion of rewarding complexity.

HATE SOUNDSYSTEM

The majority of the material on this label is previously unreleased, original junglist hardcore dating back to 1991-1994 from producers who wish to remain anonymous. A carload full of dubplates and DAT tapes full of unreleased material was handed over to the label at Sowerby bridge in Yorkshire sometime in 2008. HATE is a Modern Love project and the clandestine crew have previously only played live once before, at a legendary Faktion dance party in 2008. They will close the night with a revised and updated version.

TOBIAS

Tobias Freund is the revered German producer who has collaborated with house and techno deities Ricardo Villalobos as Odd Machine, Atom™ as PinkElln and most famously as NSI with Sun Electric’s Max Loderbauer. His productions are held in the highest regard by house and techno DJ’s around the world and most notably he only uses a full hardware setup with an incredible array of vintage analog equipment at his disposal.

EFDEMIN

Efdemin is the alias of Phillip Sollmann, a Berlin based producer and music fiend with a distinct sound converging deep house warmth with precise techno minimalism. He is partly responsible for the resurgence in interest around Deep House values in the world of European dancefloors alongside this events guests, Move D and Tobias with his impeccably selected ‘Carry On, Pretend We’re Not In The Room’ mix for Curle Recordings. Efdemins sound is calculated and forward thinking, yet passionate and classically informed.

MOVE D

David Moufang is a true legend of European house and electronic music with a career spanning 15 years and countless pseudonyms covering all bases from Deep House minimalism to Jazz electronica and ambient. Resident Advisor charted Move D in the top 3 live acts of their 2008 polls and he already has strong connections with Manchester, recording some of his finest output for the city’s own Modern Love imprint besides his own highly respected Source label.

This looks great. Hope Zomby turns up and plays a non-Where Were U set, though. And does loads of ketamine.
