i don't know specifics for this year but in general, september is a pretty good time to be in nyc. everyone goes away/chills out in august, then shifts into high gear when they get back. for example, september is the start of the new gallery season with lots of big-name shows in chelsea, if you're into that sort of thing. plus the weather is usually good: still warm but not summer hot anymore or fall/winter cold yet.
and yeah, check time out ny as you get closer to your dates.
Quality, my GF is a part time art buff having done History Of Art at uni (yes I know, classic 'pointless' degree) so hopefully we'll find something she's in to amongst the openings, although saying that my legs just about died doing the rounds of Guggenheim, MoMA and the Metropolitan last year. Good job the weather will be good too, staying at my sister's new place with roof terraces and pool. Better pack my speedos.
