I guess in the same way I wouldn't play most babalon in most sets, i also wouldn't play a lot of the ambient jungle in most sets.
Yes, as @thirdform said above, a person can dance to anything, but what makes people WANT to dance?
If people are going to say something is the best, then they should have to accept there may be detractors.
I suppose it could be said to be the dance music in the way that a person can groove along to it while also feeling like they're in the clouds, but that's why i would also say a lot of the dub techno stuff isn't the best dance music.

i don't even know what best dance music means as a value judgment tbh.

there are best dance musics for set occasions. noone would play full throttle electro for a family bbq

if I was inviting people around for a bbq, i'd be more likely to make a playlist of Ray Barretto, marcus val, Fania all stars, Herbie Hancock, that sort of thing. mcb - the time is right, starvue body fusion, vibrations shake it up, whispers you're the one for me. etc, etc. maybe some old reggae as well. but dj stingray?

I mean, alone, I can listen to anything. even sine wave compositions.

But if we think about it as a social occasion.

that being said i went to a bbq once where they put on monotonous psytrance. so some people don't pay attention it seems.

although one thing which made me laugh so hard when I first read it (in bring the noise I think?) was @blissblogger saying that for getting in the mood for baby making he would opt for the cocteau twins.

I love liz fraser, i really do, but her vocals are way too ethereal and posh for that sort of thing, mate.

I should do a going away party bbq before I move soon and invite all the extended family around and set up my gear and pa system and play nothing but stingray, galaxian, etc.

i wasn't commenting on anyone's tastes or range of tastes, by the way - nor saying that version was making the assertion (but if you are, we just disagree on it, mate)

possibly to detract from YT rips finding their way into mixed mp3-collected sets, house gets the same treatment at times ie a needle skip which is just too perfect to be accidental

this thread title. 90s ambient jungle is fucking shit, the whole proposition of it is dysfunctional. "chilling out" over sped up breakbeats, it most times creates a dull conflicted zone, not generative-ly paradoxical like a complex system, but counter-productive. im not sure anyone back then was really truly inspired to make an ambient jungle tune to chill out to, more like they thought it would be a good idea for some contrived reason, something to manufacture, find a new market

atmospheric or abstract jungle as a proposition, that works, that bears fruit. Weird spaced out jungle that you cant really dance to but puts you in a tight odd tense but open mental state, references & recalls dance rhythmically and culturally but in a frustratingly paradoxical removed or semi-functional way.. all that can be compelling, like the artist is actually acheiving their aims. metalheadz blue note music before all the major label advances and acid jazz begging, dj krust when hes not doing jump up, the weird totally fractured post dnb that started in the mid 00s. A lot of the stuff posted in this thread.

although come to think of it, that recent gen-z ambient breakcore was actually decent in terms of achieving what it meant to. probably because there wasnt even the slightest pretense that it was anything other than headphone bedroom soundcloud music, all shoegaze skuzz and anime samples, very deliberate teenage dirtbag music.
fkn hell im sure ive done this bit on this forum before

third wave of psychedelia was UK 1987 - 1995, fourth wave was Japan 1996 - 2001, and 2019 to present is fourth wave in Tandalty, Sudan

this post constitutes fragments of my cosmic wave theory
and I haven't even mentioned the reverse negative cosmic waves ( New York 1966 - present, London 1976 - 78, etc )

Other then Jungle... some of the more Tech Step tunes with an atmospheric/intelligent element still hold up for me.

Jonny L - Underwater Communication
Deep Blue - Destroyer
Deep Blue & Blame - Transitions
Saba - Connected
Lexis - Groove Therapy (Photek Remix)

Many more from 96 - 98.

And I was listening to Klute - Lie Cheat and Steal the other day and some tunes on that reminded I still like plain old Drum and Bass.
