View Full Version : Dropboxing the Dissensian Music?

Have thought about this for a while.

Would anyone be up for launching a drop box folder for dissensus ( I have one and will happily send you invites - I get more space )?

Then we can all share files.

Metal
Dubstep
Jazz
Experimental

Would be the first 4 to spring to mind.....

Thoughts?

If you PM me ill send you some log in details - I'd like to refer you if pos ( if you haven't joined already. ).

Then we could go about setting up folders and inviting people.

Sorry if I appear at it eager - im not spamming, just found it to be a nice way to discover new music

Great design. Interesting content. Well done.

Oh, and on the subject of downloading files, does anyone know what I need to get around the fact that Media Player doesn't recognise, therefore won't open, things I download from personal sites? It handles stuff from proper stores. I've tried searching for an answer but not found one.

Windows Media Player? What sort of files are you trying to open? .Mp3, flac, ogg?

Windows Media Player, yes....er...well...excuse my technical ignorance, but, you know the downloads people offer on sites, that take you to a file-sharing site - sorry - that's vague, I know, but I have never bothered trying to determine the actual nature of what I'm downloading. I'm hoping there's a facility I can download that'll allow me to open them. I do know there are different types of, um, files (?).

Oh, and thanks for the link. I shall spend the next two days trying to make sense of the issue.

VLC media player (just google it) opens almost everything. As for getting Windows MP to recognise it, not sure...

I recommend foobar2000 as a music player, very lightweight.

Or winamp if you want something easy to use, foobar is kind of technical.

this is my first use of dropbox, a couple of dumb questions:

- when someone uploads a file, does the file actually get loaded directly into the folder on my hard drive, or is it instead placed in a remote dropbox folder from which i download the file, if i want it?

- and if i delete a file i see in the folder on my computer, does it remove the file from everyones folders?

- can i create a secure folder for my personal use (work stuff) that only i can access, or would i need to set up my own account?

thanks.

Hi Leo

I am by no means an expert but.....ill have a go

Its basically online storage - you have to invite people to share the files with you.

I have other folders, but I havent invited people to share them, so you dissensians will only have access to the ones I've requested to share with you.

When someone uploads a file it sits online until you open/download it, so if you want to play an itunes track itunes will automatically pop it into your library..... on your hard drive.

If you delete a folder in dropbox you delete it for everyone - because its the same online folder everyone is sharing.

Any tech guys - please correct me if i'm wrong.

I'm on board now, it looks really cool. Have added a couple of wee things already in the Misc box.

Can we have a folder for dance music/electronic music or something? Then I could really start sharing good stuff.

i think you can just create one, then you need to invite sharers

Sufi wants to share some files with you using Dropbox.

OK I've created a Dissensus Electronic Dance Music folder. Now I just need email addresses. PM me if you want to share.

edit: I'm happy to add any of you regular dissensus users to this folder, but please, no recent, commercially available stuff. Otherwise unavailable tunes, mixes and vinyl rips only please.

Gosh - I really didn't think this through.

At first I thought a bunch of folders for members to chuck files into would be cool, now I'm coming round to the idea that volume will undermine positives.

Whilst it may be altruistic to dump the entire Papa Roach catalogue into the folders to share with people, if no-one is asking for it then those files are just clogging up the valuable space of other members dropboxes ( some of these maybe smaller/larger than others ) so whilst 1k of naff nu-metal may not be the end of the world for some it could frustrate others.

When Benny B first mentioned discussing the sort of criteria for a warranted upload I didnt like it ( no offense ), but I cant help but think that a few simple ground rules would avoid the situation deteriorating into an un-rewarding experience/frustrating palaver.

- Use it for things people may not find readily available
- Use it if another member suggests, if someone else would rather dropbox a particular file rather than search online or through open p2p networks.
- Use it to better illustrate thread content ( if asked, or if starting a thread )

That said, I don't want come across all dictatorial, it's your folder as much as mine, but it has to work out positively for everyone - what do you guys think of what I've said so far?

wascal
23-11-2010, 06:30 PM
I've hit a problem as I use my dropbox account to share my music and have access to a few mates' ones - these dissensus dropbox folders have within a couple of days whacked me way over the 2gb limit for free accounts and afaik you can only have one account synced with a folder on your pc

Benny B
23-11-2010, 06:48 PM
You, I must confess I didn't realise that this would be a problem. I didn't know the folders could fill up in this way and thought the space available in them was the sum total of all the contributers to them (if you know what I mean). Obviously I misunderstood.

As I mentioned to you earlier, I don't want to be a dropbox-nazi about what should be posted in these folders either but in the folder I set up (the dance music one) I don't really want stuff you can buy elsewhere cos I'm not really down with that and I think most people would agree. I think the ground-rules you've stated above seem pretty reasonable though and I'm happy to stick with them.

One problem is you can't really tell who's uploading what into them. Space isn't a huge issue for me as I'm not planning to use dropbox for anything else at the minute, but I can see how that would be a pain in the arse for people like Wascal. Maybe its best to just have some sort of regular clear-out of the folders so things are only up for a limited time. And of course ask people not to go daft and upload shitloads of stuff at once.

Proper can of worms! lol

you
23-11-2010, 06:56 PM
Wascal - Yeah, one per computer.... But that will grow if you can invite people, why not invite your work computer and your mates computer, gain 1/2G then delete the program?

Benny B - Ha, yeah! I don't use it for anything other than this, but for people who do it could become a pain. I think just being a little reserved and reflexive ( like you are before you launch a new thread ) is best, yknow just stop and think is it really needed sort of mentality....

Benny B
23-11-2010, 06:57 PM

probably best not upload this much stuff at one, especially without anyone specifically asking for it then?

I'm gonna delete some of the stuff I uploaded tomorrow I think so grab whatever you want while you can. And just ask me if you want anything more specific. I've got plenty of old-skool hardcore, jungle and garage rips ready to go fwiw.

continuum
23-11-2010, 08:00 PM
folders need to be moderated. only leave stuff in there for a specified amount of days before deleting. the electronic dance music one doesn't have much in it at present. please upload some more hardcore jungle garage rips Benny. Enjoyed what's been posted in there so far. im going to upload some 4x4 grime vinly rips this evening.

Benny B
23-11-2010, 08:16 PM
I will be upping some more stuff tomoz when I delete what I put in there yesterday. By all means go ahead and put the grime in there, then just delete it in a day or two. I will moderate this folder but obv don't want people taking the piss.

I'm also slightly conscious of clogging up the main forum with posts about whats gonna be shared etc. Better to use pms for specific requests etc. its not puregrimeforum after all and I don't want dissensus getting a reputation for being a haven for file-sharing. That would suck.

Benny B
23-11-2010, 08:45 PM
You, you're inbox is full by the way. Just to say I look fwd to your recommendations! ;)

Benny B

Actually, just one more thing.

This is a Dissensus shared folder ting right? So where do you lot stand on inviting people who don't post on here much, or haven't been on here for very long? Should there be some sort of rule where you have to have so many posts on dissensus or something before you're allowed to join?

I only ask because its you lots music that's getting shared and you should really have a say in who has access to it. I'd appreciate it if the people already involved and are uploading things let me know what you think about this, just in case a load of lurkers keep bothering me to add them. I find it hard to say no to people, so maybe there should be some sort of minimum post requirement?

Please let me know what you think, I don't want this keeping me up all night, wracked with guilt lol

Well, one could always invite people (who ever they might be) with access to the drop-box folders to a special, newly created hidden subforum with a thread for each of the folders. Messaging many people over PM's is rather unwieldy.

In my experience it might be worthwhile having a requests.txt file each folder that people can add things too...

How would you go about creating a sub-forum though? Sounds a bit over-elaborate to me and not something I really want to get into. i like the idea of a requests text file though, do you know how to sort that out?

Still doesn't really answer my question though...who should have access? Sorry to over-complicate matters but this could do with being thought through and organised properly so everyone knows who has access to what they're uploading. I think dropbox is a brilliant idea but its also a bit of a minefield...

Dr Awesome
23-11-2010, 11:26 PM
Creating sub-forums is pretty straight forward. This forum almost certainly has one for the admins/mods already.
Normally in the forum control panel you can just add rights to different people.

ANYWAY, for the other idea: one simply makes a blank text file and leaves it in the relevant folder. If you want something you can add it to the file and re-save. Just don't delete what's already on the list.
Other people can read the list, and if they've got something - upload it. They can either then delete the request on the list or just write a note saying it's uploaded and leave it to the requests originator to delete off the list.

Leo
23-11-2010, 11:40 PM
selfish, perhaps, but i think we should just keep it for dissensians (?), for the time being anyway. seems like it would be easier to manage that way.

i don't feel strongly about it, though, so if others feel otherwise then by all means go ahead and open the floodgates.

you
24-11-2010, 09:12 AM
Sub Forum is a good idea.

I have only invited dissensians, but some sort of control over access would be good - finite space issues....

A text file of 'looking for' stuff would be good, we could check it now and again, and upload to help people get the stuff they want.

I am a little concerned about the public nature here, like Benny said ( oh Benny - Jazz is in there ), I dont want to give Dissensus a file sharing haven rep - so a sub forum sounds like a great idea.

Wouldn't mind Sufi or someone chiming in here if they have any opinions about whats best for the forum - sort of not my call in many ways.

Inbox a little clearer now those who have been trying to PM me.

Ok theres been a few people asking about this recently, its probably time we reactivated the electronic dance music folder.

AFAIK everythings still working as normal so who's interested in reviving this thing? There was loads of good stuff shared for a while. Radio sets, vinyl rips, rarities...

Anyone who wants an invite to the dropbox folder and the sub-forum needs to send pm me their email address.

actually it would be pretty cool if Slackk, Luka, Corpsey and Crowleyhead signed up and shared some rap stuff, the hip hop threads have been the best things about dissensus this year beacuse of them.

these new folders aren't showing up for me, do you have to invite me again?

It probably makes sense for everyone to use the same forum to talk about what we're sharing, requests etc. i wonder if I can change the name of the subforum to just 'Dissensus dropbox music' or something? Then everyone can just start threads for the different folders in there.

I've sent out a few invites to the EDM folder just now, hopefully we can get this thing rolling again!

What i mean is a few 12" rips are one thing. But expanding to books, software, etc. is completely different - puts the whole site at risk. I'll let sufi weigh in but I don't think it's something we should be doing (much as I might find it useful). There are plenty of other sites for that stuff too.

I put in the second album by Scottish (?) black metal band Ordog in the metal folder.

It's sort of weird, almost jazzy, bass forward (but not 'bassy') black metal.

Just realised I should do them as .zip/.rar folders though.

Will add some more messed up metal over the weekend?

Does anyone have anything they would like to hear? Black noise stuff, or pure black metal?

Does anyone have anything they would like to hear? Black noise stuff, or pure black metal?

i've never known where to start with black or death metal...i'd be into a sampling of some of the more extreme stuff. not "popular" stuff like immortal, but the weirder and more fucked up shit. thanks!

I can do a 'black metal dj mix' - just coz that'd be right well fun to make anyway.

Also... Before I do I suppose I should point out that some of this stuff can be pretty politically charged (read: made by absolute dumbasses. Burzum being a prime example... But there are worse ones out there... There are always worse ones out there...)

If anyone has any serious objections to this then I can avoid the more serious nazi stuff.

Yeah, I'd be very suprised if most of the stuff on there was professionally (or even at all) mastered, so the volume is kind of fucked.

Glad you guys are into it.

I just realised there was some absolutely essential stuff that I forgot to put on... Will start to trickle things...

Really enjoying the grime sets as well. Great set-up.

and can some other people put in their grime sets please, lets not get back into the all take and no give that nearly killed the Drop Box before

wise, you would have to invite you to the metal folder.

I'll start a grime sets thread. Really enjoyed the Jamakabi/Flowdan set you put in is fire! Not sure I've got anything to share that isn't on grimetapes though.

looking forward to it, thanks much. interested in the creepy, weird, low-fi/homemade sounding stuff. aquarius records in sf are into this stuff, they review new releases on their website that sound crazy, some not even guitar-based.

Will do..

Most of the stuff I have is older/more-guitar-based... But I have a decent amount lying around...

Plus elite contacts in the industry and shit

Hey...

I have just been informed that I've used 90% of my dropbox space... (Well over 2/3 of this is in the Dissensus folders) - what do I do free up some space without deleting stuff for everyone?

Benny B

I suppose all people should do is warn everyone in the subforum to copy it while they can, then delete after a few days. Things can easily be re-upped if needs be. I've just cleared out a few old things that've been there for ages. There's no need to just leave things in there for ages taking up space.

Also having worked at Burger King I can confirm that that 'bitties in the bk lounge' track is 100% accurate.
