lol at wiley. if you're going out he's going out too, but remember that in the event he does actually go out too he'll probably only do five tunes, pull each of them up half-way through for no reason, and then leave after fifteen minutes. he didn't tell you that bit in the lyrics.

dirty canvas was live anyway, but all thanks to tomb crew (so good) and mj cole.

So did Wiley turn up? He hadn't shown by the time I left

MJ Cole was good in bits, but Chemical Brothers? House of Pain? Really odd selection. I thought Darkstar before him did a great 2 step set, tho

its funny how grime events come in co-ordinated bursts

i swear half the time im moaning that theres never any on, and now theres more grime nights than i have money or time for, its great!

have the met given up on their pointless crusade, grime artists got more hungry, promoters got more interesting or what?

*i dont read the guardian, only metro/londonlite/londonpaper innit, and even then only on the bus

I'd hardly call Dirty Canvas a grime rave anymore.

And whoever that host was who wouldnt shut the fuck up for the entire set should be banned from microphone contact.

did enjoy last night but too much old garage (which i like but didnt think that was what i was gonna be hearing), TOO MUCH boring dubstep and not nearly enough grime. left around 1.30 or so. dont know if wiley turned up but couldnt be bothered to stick around for it. the mc was alright for a bit but went on for too long. i was hoping for some other emcees, not him (whoever he was). bit sad that all the grime stuff they seemed to be playing was old stuff. is it 'back to 2002' already???

Be sure to wipe that nasty grime off the sole of your shoe when you move onto the next stepping stone.

Thought that was blatantly obvious to be honest. It's a grime night that has now become a night with all kinds of shit going on, grime becoming less and less prominent but still a clear feature of the night.

Just one of those things innit.

Last night people heard grime, uk garage, bassline, funky house, dancehall, dubstep, jungle, hip hop....strange bedfellows I know, but it went down fine.

I and the others involved in dc are not overly worried about fitting into some else's definition of what a grime rave should be. Perhaps if we had, we wouldn't be approaching our third birthday

I and others responsible for people turning up to Dirty Canvas for those 3 years are worried that it now tends to cater for Shoreditch trendies.

It's just a shame that something which existed for 2 years because Grime artists were willing to perform for loose change has now turned into something which has blended into the other sea of painfully trendy events which offer nothing more than cultural tourism.

I noticed that the night was DJ heavy and hardly any MCs turned up. That makes up for half the grime scene showing up and spitting for free for the past 3 years.

I don't enjoy performing there anymore and doubt I will be attending it in the immediate future in it's current format.

Couple of mixtapes I've been thinking of buying, namely the OG Season one and Jammer's Are You Dumb vol 3. Can anyone here recommend either of em? .

I can definitely recommend the O.G.'s mixtape, particularly if you want a change from the more light-hearted poppier direction a lot of grime artists are heading in recently. This one is fucking dirty - no nonsense road shit - and delivered by an allstar line-up of South MCs. If you like shit like Slew Dem, you'll be right into this. Jendor kills every track he touches.

Are You Dumb Vol. 3 is a bit hit and miss for me. Buy it if you like Jammer, or if you want the CDQ of Skankin Ting, but personally I preferred Vol. 2 and 1.

Cheers for the pointers. Had a listen to both of these on Juno and I reckon they're probably both worth a purchase. That OGs one does sound proper dark and grimey.

Just realised why I like that freestyle track on Dot Rotten's myspace so much. Its eight bar!
Still really like 8 bar stuff. Anyone know if its an old instrumental he's MCing over, and whether its likely to get a release?

It's called Grime & Bass. P Money did a track on it too.

It will most likely be made available as a download.

bandz ahoy
DC was weird.. to be fair I was feeling rough the whole time but it did feel very different at that venue.

I saw about 2 minutes of Wiley while being crushed into the wall by hundreds of people holding their cameraphones in the air. He was sounding good though, particularly if he fell off his bike as I heard lol

sad to hear logan

for me what made dc so amazing (havent been to the last few) was the mc's who'd turn up, swarm the stage and spit. as the audience you kind of knew they werent being paid, they werent billed, it was unpredictable, and there was the real vibe of the mcs "putting the work in", practising and building up a fanbase - i really appreciated that sentiment

then there was the audience which was really into grime and a few journo's, everyone chanting along, so many wheels - it was wicked

if this is gone from dc and just replaced by flavour of the month music + some old school specials then im as upset as the next grime fan and understand your sentiment

to be fair to dc ive had some amazing nights there though

i think its prob a survival thing - if DV is going to keep going (and growing) theyre going to have to be a bit more expansive, even if that means losing their initial identity (and grime loses its main/only real club night).
