Yeah I'd be a bit peeved. I can't that compare to what he plays in the UK though cos I haven't seen him over here unfortunately. I personally prefer it when DJs don't play many of their own tunes in sets unless they're unreleased/dubplates.

yh hello and that. caught roska in leeds and his set was pretty much how it's been described here. struggled with relatively shoddy sound and a shocking mc, but mixing still dubious, and tunes of his that he dropped were the released ones plus a bit of rat alert/wile out-ish student fayre. was really hoping for a bit of an eye-opener broken/house wise - thought afterwards he might have been playing up to the student audience in terms of selection, but give the above maybe not. be interested to hear what he comes with for sonar....

^^ Anyway..
- I like Ghetts generally, and his Moonwalk Ting bit is ok, but I feel like the Thriller refix deserves a better vocal than that. Hopefully someone else comes along and does a new version of it at some point.
On the other hand, the Broken Wings vocal over Theme From Slackk sounds excellent, and I'm not just saying this 'cause Slackk is one of Dissensus local-heroes (thoug obv it's nice to see someone you know doing well and achieving things). I totally agree with Dan about Badness fitting the beat well and having a real way with hooks. So big congrats for getting him and the other MCs to do it and for having Spyro play it on radio already.

he has basically said he sees himself creating a bridge with dubstep audiences etc., providing a showcase rather than preaching to the converted. given the kind of music he makes and the kind of bookings he always gets, it makes sense as well.

i'm not sure he deserves too much criticism for failing to be something he's not. in my experience hardcore funky fans are not particularly interested in him as a dj. i think he's great producer incidentally... but maybe a bit more as if in his own sphere.

if you want something else you'd have to go see another dj... i appreciate it might be easier said than done in leeds but don't the likes of marcus get about quite a lot?

The one track 'i need love' off of the roska album is really great, such a sick tune and really catchy samples, love it.

Not to keen on the rest of the album, but it sounds really well produced/clean from what I have listened to. Good work. (Sorry for my lateness)

i need love is a beauty. but i think energy, time stamp and squark (though maybe not for the anti-student crowd ;)) are all really good as well.

BareBones

wheezy
i've had a wicked time every time i've seen roska, won't hear me complaining about someone playing wile out (though i'm not all that fussed about rat alert). and yeah 'i need love' is amazing.

ps cheers for the links Ory!

he absolutely is a great producer, and in his own sphere, no questions - for me personally tho producers playing out works by and large on the basis of dubplates. to be fair i could check for a whole load of non-producing, anyman DJs into dubstep/funky/wotdoyouwhatever that would have played the same set with broadly the same mixing ability, just without being roska...

time stamp and squark are both tunes mind, and some students are allright you know...;)

going on that logic, you are saying because the 'anymandj' isnt called roska, he going to play a top ten released funky tunes set.

Marcus Nasty was in Leeds just last week. I only caught about half his set as I was knackered but it sounded alright. He played some rubish in with the gems though, stuff like Pon Di Floor...

In other news, I'm pretty addicted to the latest Altered Natives 12": Believe in me: / Rhaaatid Einstein:

no not at all. in fact this is exactly what i meant:

EDIT: In a way, it makes it so there isn't really much point at all in paying to go see them when they are playing virtually exactly what the local DJs are, without bringing anything extra to the table except their face.

I got the chance to support Roska in Newcastle and I thought his mixing was great, wasn't surprised to hear loads of his own tunes, saying as he is a producer, and he has great tunes.

Was a wicked night that wunnit Damo?

Quite a few obvious selections but its not often I get the chance to hear something like In the Morning getting blasted through a decent system on a busy dancefloor. In fact I would have been a bit disappointed if he hadn't played lots of the big tunes.

Anyway, I recorded Petchy's show with Topsee & Shantie last night. Big vibes as usual...

Anyone know what the second Rnb-ish tune is on this set? I've heard it getting played quite a bit by them and I love it. I think the chorus goes something like 'Its just the way you move/ that I really think that I could be your man' with the funky/squelchy bassline following the melody.

If anyone hasn't dowloaded the DJ Champion promo mix yet then you're clearly mad in the head. For those looking for grime-tinged bits there are quite a few goodies here. There's this proper mad one about 11 tracks in which is like some cold, grimey female vocal tune. Desperate for an ID on it but suspect I'll be waiting a while.
