It occurs to me that this is like something from a musical (or opera). Hugely overblown and melodramatic.

And of course I (semi guiltily) love it, it overwhelms me, just as those soaring Disney ballads do.

Not sure how much RnB resides in this Broadway/Opera zone. Reminded of boxedjoys's "too sexy for sex" or whatever it was lmao I've probably garbled it - but you know, emotions that are TOO much.

Or merely boring and conventional.

Remembering also that many people find a 4x4 kick drum and a hit hat emotionally captivating (I myself can in the right loud dark circumstances...)

What's the difference between opera and musicals? Is it that dialogue in musicals is also spoken?

Operas are all in Italian so no one can understand them. That's the major difference. Also operas are full of fat people.

is it more acceptable for the setting to be somewhere that people might really start singing, like blues brothers or school of rock (?), than somewhere like the effing workhouse of oliver?

This does highlight something which is that not being able to understand opera probably makes it seem more "cultured" to people, like subtitled films.

Seen school of rock again recently, had forgotten how good it was, leaves you tingling all over.
Seen Sing! several times with the kid and it's a pretty annoying kids film but I still get that same involuntary hairs standing on end reaction at the big finale despite myself.

Nightmare before Xmas is amazing.

I used to like Westside Story when I was young but I doubt I could watch it now - I think Sufi's right about stuff like Oliver.

The absolute worst most sickening musical has to be Moulin Rouge though, not that I've seen the full thing but the clips I have are fucking horrendous. Or anything Bollywood, really gross.

I actually enjoyed the Sing! version of that Stevie Wonder song at the finale more than the original - I say 'enjoyed' but it's really more of an involuntary reaction, they're so manipulative those films. It was electrifying when I saw it at the cinema.

The Jungle Book! The original ofc, but I seen a bit of the remake recently and it looked really good as well. Was a bit surprised cos it got pretty shit reviews I think didn't it? Dunno maybe they fucked up the ending which I didn't see.
