I am downloading it now. I ahve played Hal's previous one an awful lot. there was avery good sampler of Scandanavian music given away free with The Wire about 5 years ago which it put me in mind of.

No.14 out now - Ness/Hal's short history of Norwegian post-punk. Been looking forward to this one - great stuff. Here's a link: http://www.halvorsen.org/arts/music/blogariddims14

(Also, can I add to the recommendation that Hal's previous contribution (no.9) is a real grower - been listening to it loads recently.)

Fun stuff. Fra La Lippo is the only of these groups I know at all well. I'll have to have a conversation with Hal soon. . .

Some time cues would be really, really helpful on B'riddims 14. . . (for example, which track is it that comes in around 22:05?)

I'm in town tonight, but will do timings on the tracks tomorrow when I get home from work and also a bit more of the background stuff.

Kicking in around 22:05 should be Fra Lippo Lippo's "A Small Mercy", unless I screwed up in the vinyl->MD->MP3 process.

--beatmatched, mind you--ought to be participating in the B'rid'ms project, no? And that's just a random, most recent example--not something the DJ put together with an especial audience in mind.

This is Dominique Leone, who, yes, does write for P****fork, but is one of their few genuinely credible writers/sets of ears.

Thoughts?

In the spirit of ³Beat Research² I made it a point to switch
genres with each new addition and was particularly open to playing tracks at
odd speeds. Another thing I wanted to do was include some of my favorite
songs that are outside of the hip-hop/electronica world but that mean a lot
to me personally - I was psyched to include tracks from two of my all time
favorite records; "Double Nickels on the Dime" by the Minutemen and "Remain
in Light" by the Talking Heads. I like to take advantage of the fact that
we have the entire history of recorded music at our fingertips and put older
music in a new context.

Originally planned as a kind of footnote to a couple of
dancehall mixes currently in the works (but of course I finished the
footnote first!), this mix was supposed to gather together all those weird
one-off tunes and riddims that were too crucial to ignore, but would'nt
really fit into more conventional sets. I wanted to showcase the
astounding inventiveness and originality of the era, so I had a simple
ground-rule that I decided to use for all of these mixes: original riddims
only - no 60's or 70's recuts!

Grievous Angel

Beast of Burden
blogariddims 17:paul Meme - Tons of Boxes

This month I've done the 17th mix for the mighty Blogaridims podcast series. It's a load of my favourite dub, roots and dancehall tunes, done "live" on decks and dubbed up using an Access Virus synth as an FX box. I inflicted some serious damage on a few of these tunes with that.

I originally did it back in late 2001 or early 2002, a few months after moving back up to Sheffield from London, and while experiencing withdrawl symptoms from not having seen Shaka for a while. It's a heavy mix - 20 minutes of hard dub followed by an increasing amount of vocals (leavened with some out-there FX), melting into sweet soul reggae and a couple of classics, before dissolving into cold, painful dub. I sent a 74 minute version of this out on CD to a few people at the time but this is the first time it's been available as a download. Editing it down to an hour and re-mastering it has made it a bit punchier in my opinion. You can get this mix by signing up to the blogariddims podcast feed (which you really ought to do, they're very good) or just downloading the mp3 from the same place - which is here.

Enjoy...

Now for some track by track commentary...

0.00 Velvet Shadows: Dubbing & Wailing
Absolutely killer, deep-funk loping roots Tubbys dub of the Velvet Shadows Wailing Of Black People.

3:32 King Tubby: Explosion Dub
The absolute solid gold classic Tubbys dub, justifiably famous and here given a seriously overdriven, squelchy makeover.

7:29 Gregory Isaacs: Leggo Beast
Gregory entirely absent sadly, but devastating instrumental steppers intensity is present and in full effect. On the Swing Easy / Spirit of Umoja riddim and apparently produced by Dennis Brown and Augustus Pablo, but I have no more information than that...

10:51 Sly & the Revolutionaries: Cocaine
A slight downshift in mood but still in militant steppers territory, this was featured on Sly Dunbar's 1980 Black Ash Dub lp. Made by Sly'n'Robbie, Ansell Collins and Bingy Bunny, and mixed by Scientist. Fabulous.

14:31 Roots Radics: Mission Impossible
Pure deep space dub rocking from 1983's "Scientist & Jammy Strike Back" LP.

17:38 Barrington Levy: Rob and Gone...

And now we're into the vocal selection. This was originally on Levy's 1983 Poor Man Style LP. Gets into some serious dub distortion.

20:34 Ranking Joe: Choice of Colour
From 1980, and produced by Jah Screw. Bouncy MC slammer.

24:20 Mikey Dread: Barber Saloon
Mikey's classic take on the "barber" lyrical theme from 1979's Dread At The Controls LP.

29:12 Linval Thompson: Don't Cut Off Your Dreadlocks
Keeping with the tonsorial theme - briefly reprised later in the mix - is the fantastic combination of Linval Thompson and U Roy, the latter in perfect meditational mood. Produced by Bunny Lee in, I think, 1976 - fabulous, sprightly, rich reggae.

32:25 Big Youth: Pride & Joy
God I LOVE this tune. From 1973's Screaming Target of course, this are perhaps the most transcendent, glorious "dooby dooby doobies" ever committed to wax, heart-wounded plain song translated into universalist epiphany. Just awesome. Serious filtered echo action on this one.

34:51 Big Youth: Pride & Joy (Grievous Angel Dub)
Loved the chugging fat groove so much on this I had to take this back for some even more intense dub overload.

37:33 Lee Perry: Bury the Razor
Oh, boy, I just love this too! More barber-bashing business but now in fabulous down-tempo grooviness. Bubbles up from underwater dub... From David Katz' "Born in the Sky" LP.

40:58 The Silvertones: Feel Alright
But this really is the greatest sweet vocal on this mix... also from "Born in the Sky", this is a recording of the Silvertones rehearsing, just running through the song, and the relaxed nature of the session really comes through. Stunning.

43:27 Niney The Observer: Blood & Fire
Possibly over-familiar, but at the time I was obsessed with this tune, which gets a subtle dub treatment.

46:22 Delroy Wilson: Better Must Come
Also possibly over-familiar, but such a solid gold tune ad it lifts the mood of the mix at just the right moment. Another Bunny Lee production, from 1971, presented here in a subtle dub.

48:59 Scotty: Riddle I This
Fantastic, music-box-like proto-dancehall mechanisms on display here - massive, ever-building repetitive rhythm, a really strong Scotty track.

51:27 Susan Codogan: Do It Baby
Superb, slinky JA pop produced by Lee Perry, absolutely kicking, and I was very lucky with the way the echoes lined up with the BPM of the tune.

54:26 Linval Thompson: I Love Marijuana
The smash hit 1978 cut that melded vocal sweetness and steppers heaviosity to pulverising effect. Backed by Sly and the Revolutionaries and with either Tubby or Jammy on the buttons.

57:43 Linval Thompson: Marijuana Dub
Some mean filtered distortion action on this mix.

Why is this:

a) in the wrong forum
b) way early?

:slanted:

Being a proud owner of the original mix I am very much looking forward to getting the re-rub!
