No Giles Peterson on Radio 1, Skream and Benga given permanent show.

Not a massive fan but glad Charlie Sloth got a show

He's annoying but will be good to get a bit of british rap on radio one

Wasn't Giles' show shunted to 2-4 on a weekday morning. ever since Benji B moved over from 1xtra he must've realised his days were numbered. 6music would be a much better home for him these days anyway.

Six music is just a radio 1 retirement home isn't it?

I'm not sure the new arrivals will have anywhere near the longevity of their predecessors.

It kind of makes sense, though - I mean, it seems to be aiming for a demographic that's a bit too old / serious / rockist for Radio 1, so taking the serious / rockist DJs from radio 1 when they get a bit older and not quite yoof enough seems entirely sensible.

gilles is great. where else are you going to hear half the 70s jazz/funk/soul stuff he plays? benji b is good but hes younger and is more hip hop, gilles is more 70s black music. hes an institution if you ask me. like a black music john peel. i dont like the guy personally all that much (dont know him but he just seems annoying, or the forced gentle-ness of his voice is anyway) and i think his judgement/general focus might be slipping a tiny bit these days (always weird to hear him playing ppl like dizzee, i cant see how it fits with what else he plays) but his output is pretty hard to question. if you dont like him, you prob just dont like the music he plays. and theres a lot of mini gilles about these days. that guy who was playing dangelo and don cherry the other night on rinse (this threw me a bit) is one of these.

Thats exactly what I said to my mate! haha

What I think radio 1 needs is eclectic Djs who, like Giles, who will playa myriad of different styles, it differentiates it from the "specialist" radio stations. If they are going to focus on one sound then something like the 1 in the jungle shows would be a good look.

Also, I think the points about the longevity of the new DJs may well be true - but I suppose only time will tell...

i'm just always impressed that people in the uk still listens to and care about radio. in the states, commercial radio totally blows, all pretty much top 40, classic rock, soft rock, cool jazz or talk. there's nothing resembling underground sounds on the airwaves, aside from on small nonprofits (wfmu) or college radio.

re: gilles, are any of his brownswood compilation cds worth getting? lots of artists i don't know.

"DJs Fabio and Grooverider announce residency in rave retirement home"

http://www.thedailymash.co.uk/news/...sidency-in-rave-retirement-home-201112094656/

:D

'Rave Meadows is a specialist care home for ageing ravers who want to continue partying but in a secure environment with nurses on hand to feed them, change their toilet pads and take care of any mental health issues.'

Nurse Emma Bradford said: “Sometimes the residents can be challenging as they are mostly quite doddery and insane. But it's so rewarding when the DJ drops a big tune like the VIP dubplate mix of Champion Sound and they all hold their lighters in the air.”

agreed with pretty much all of this, the john peel parallel especially. even if he is a bit of a goober at times, there's no denying he's one of the better radio djs this country has had wrt diversity & quality of selection. he's definitely been a bit past it the last few years though. but then leftfield dance music has changed. i don't think there's as much music that fits into his niche being released nowadays. hence him playing stuff he never would have 5 years ago.

one of the first ever shows i heard of his he played moodymann's liveinla 1998 in it's entirety and that had me hooked. i was a drum n bass head who thought 4/4 was boring at the time too.

benji b is cool but he's never going to replace gilles. he doesn't go as deep.

It's got more coffee table duff than would be played on his superior radio shows, but is nicely bookended with Osunlade's best tune, Touched My Soul

yeah, touched my soul is sublime

the reason people say stupid things about gilles is that same old rock geezer thing where they just have a problem with that kind of music, the same sort of thing like where you have ppl like simon reynolds ***in 2011*** wheeling out the good old 'bass noodle' dig when talking about thundercat, its always 'haw haw jazz funk haw haw'. fuck that. i like jazz funk.

As a guy who got into Benji B late in the game, I watched him become young Gilles Peterson. The thing is, Giles was always into things that were arguably OVERTLY soulful, whereas Benji found the things that were both more modern and less 'costume' soul. But that said, Giles was the only person I ever heard directly ask Q-Tip about Weldon Irvine (RIP), and had that amazing 30 minute Kode9 & Spaceape Live Set. So, Respect.
