im starting to think individual genre polls for grime, funky, dubstep, garage etc would have been a good idea too. for the 90s that would be even harder i reckon. kano's ice rink i think is the best - hes as agile and playful on the beat as the instrumental itself. its also just nice to have that era of kano preserved so well. he was amazing back then. easily one of the best grime flows ever.

here's one remix of pulse x (iirc i voted for it) -
i luv pulse x -

Happy with this being the highest-rated dubstep track, but perhaps something by Loefah may still come up? The rest should be all-grime IMO

Now that one's out of the way I'd like to see you guys predictions.

I'm off to work now so one more until this evening.

I'm proper surprised that's in the top 10. I love it and all, but given how low Anti War Dub and Midnight Request Line were, I thought we weren't going to see any more dubstep.

Yeah, agree.

I guess it's the counterexample to what I was saying earlier - it wasn't a big zeitgeist defining scene hit like Request Line or whatever, it just happens to be a lot of people's slightly offbeat personal favourite.

Including mine, FWIW...

Just some random musings. Qawalli (which is admittedly a good tune) isn't the kind of thing you'd expect in the top ten. I'm guessing with the scoring system being what it is a track like this placed high in say, two peoples top tens, is going to rank higher than for example Sticky's Golly Gosh, even in twenty people voted for it as their 25th favourite tune. At the end of the day Benny didn't have that many polls to work with, and is presumably not a mathematician by trade- the first twenty have been largely predictable and there's nowt wrong with that.

In regards to 2000 garage being ineligible because it's a relic of the previous decade. I would counter that it's top ten chasing characteristics are the very reason why these records should be considered as authentically noughties. There couldn't have been more than five 2-step tunes in the UK charts in '98/99. I doubt many producers were intentionally making tracks with that goal in mind. Then as soon as you're into the new millennium people are jumping over themselves trying to get a single signed to a major, Dreem Teem land a high profile slot on national radio (admittedly by filling their schedule with 90% commercial R&B and often inane banter), So Solid are in the tabloids for the wrong reasons, etc. And it was that creeping commercialisation that gave birth to the bassline & MCing dominated backlash, hence DJ Zinc, Shut Up & Dance, Pulse X etc.

Ice Rink as an instrumental wouldn't have featured high on many peoples lists but with all the different versions to choose from it's a fair inclusion.

I predict that Jon E Cash or Todd Edwards won't feature in the Top 10, how do you choose a single track when they've made so many good ones.

Fascinating stuff. Might have to listen to that rinse set where wiley plays all the ice rink version back to back...completely brilliantly repetitive and brutal.

I'm glad you said that Owen, because I was starting to think that most of my poll was ineligible and it was pointless me taking part.

People either seem to be moaning about all these choices being preditcable andf mainstream or, on the contrary, that people are not being obvious enough and splitting the vote of alleged Grime classics. Quite frankly, if more people had pulled their finger out in the first place, then maybe they'd have got the poll they wanted.

Ignore all these bastards Benny, I think you're terrific.

Kyla at No. 7 is quite pleasing, although I don't (personally) think it's as good as 'In the Morning' but then I am a Fonda Rae fan.

I stayed out of this thinking that my retromaniac myopia wouldnt let me make a meaningful contribution. Now I find that nearly every tune here would be in a personal faves list.

If I luv U is number one then you're all in serious trouble.

Do You Mind is everything great about dance music. I really like this list so far! A nice range of different things, and maybe it is just the case that within the hardcore continuum, by and large the best tunes become the biggest?

Predictions: Digital Mystics - Haunted. Not a prediction perhaps as much as a hope, one of my favorite dubstep tracks by a long long watch. My guess is probably Pow for no. 1, but I think we might easily find both Pow and Oi in the top 5. Maybe Wiley - Eskimo. Interesting that there's been none of the breakbeat garage stuff, something by Darqwun for example. But I doubt that's gonna come now.

Was just thinking that we've not had anything by Dizzee yet. I Luv U would be the obvious one.

No Ruff Sqwad/Terror Danjah/Burial either, yet

I'm hoping for Joker & Wonder TBH. "What Have You Done" should be a top 3 tune by default. I do think Eskimo will be the winner, and I BELIEVE I voted for that one.

luka, do a list.
