I imagine Barty's not contributing right now because he's on a hot date, possible mulling over in his mind whether to get dressed and leave or spend the night and grapple with an awkward breakfast.

This is like when I took rum to my mates in englefield green and one of their housemates was like can you turn off the music because its distracting and close the door, turns out they wanted to fuck. no shame really he can browse dissensus with his left hand and treat his woman with the right hand.

i mean men can multitask you know. we can give all that to the feminists but not this ideological concession. impossible.

Well, this is why i have to side with trilliam on this even though we've hardly if ever spoken and i find his deep tech revisionism to itch really bad. Better to fuck royalty so that you have a whole floor to yourself.

I mean it's always utilitarian considerations innit. like i would much rather someone tell me straight off that they want to have sex because it's like people moan about too much emotional intimacy for casual fucks and fuck buddies but they bring it on themselves!

That mention of space is the place reminds me:

Ive heard it said that Afrofuturism has had its day, it's old hat, boring, not suitable framework any more.

I mean if I can find that sweet spot where pure utilitarian sex will appeal to the feminists and be seen as a symbol of empowerment I will get to inventing the app and buying an island for the dissensus.

I was convinced for a while that all those blends, refixes of dizzee, Beyonce all screwed up, like they've taken a poppy acapella and fucked about it with it, I did genuinely think it was something new (there was a mavado one where they pitched the vocal so much it was like a little girl, and I thought it was actually quite subversive) but you can't just keep doing that. Like, you run out of steam if you make it a formula. Gets boring very quick and you have to move on from that. I thought they would do it and find something but it didn't happen, maybe cos of other reasons.

You mean the night slugs descended post clubdeconstructed club scene? A lot of it is more conceptual than pretentious. I like larger han life art projects but a lot of that stuff is just almost written for pitchfork. like the chino amobi album. totally coil for woke journalists.

Yeah that kind of thing. Bootlegs and refixes ad nauseum. It felt like it was going somewhere but you're probably right, it's become an end in itself rather than a point of departure and thus boring. I don't understand the NON stuff at all really, it's unlistenable. Someone said I'd like it cos I like Dean blunt but it's not really the same sort of thing I don't think. I don't get it

A lot of it is students. It's a kind of control case for the cynics who say well, maybe students are unfairly dissed in the nuum. probably to a very small extent that might apply to some people but certainly not any of us. but yeah this scene seems to be more about carving out a space for globalised bourgeois diaspora kids. their whole approach makes very little sense to me. I have hardly anything in common with a kid in Istanbul than I do in Dalston. ironically enough though I actually collect more folk music than say the club chai lot.

Weird astrology politics and hackneyed self-love affectations from the 1970s retrofitted to the 2010s as well. They take Audre Lord as an inspiration but Audre was militant, she wasn't no socialite.

I had a thought about the nuum the other day as well, might as well share it now, whatever.

I was thinking it's dead cos the waves of migration that kicked it off have calmed down and there isn't that sense of difference you needed anymore. Like it all popped at a certain point cos the music of afrocaribbean origin had reached a level of maturity which allowed for crossover.

But that's now happened, and there isn't really any kind of correlate for now, in terms of big migration. So it's all just recycling and going over.

I mean the wider point is that we are living in a declining country (I mean the UK).

Yeah I see that. It's tricky. You basically wanna be who you are etc and draw off your non white identity but it all becomes a bit of a trap. By drawing on that, you retrench the divisions I think. Like I think it's good to be loud and brown proud or whatever, but its slippery cos it bottoms out quick

In a way this actually validates bliss blogger in a kind of weird way, the actual real IDM descended from the urban experience of these producers is actually more boring than the original purist detroit/mantronix version of Autechre.

I like Elysia Crampton though. definitely the stand out producer from that crowd. When I saw her she put a load of Brandy acapellas over some hyper bleepy and distorted stockhausen-esque soundscape. whether she's tailored her sound in the meantime I'm not sure.

Well for me as a brown person the real problem is that it has a definition of brownness I can't relate to. the kind of house in order brown people. But my community isn't like that, people around me say prejudiced things every day, it's not real. we are human too, we can't be used as a hyper-militarised political barometer.

The problem of Afrofuturism is so called afrofuturist aspiring thinkers are v. conservative. They only are just now acknowledging Lil' Wayne and Cash Money in the last few years ("oh well, they said Cash Money is a Navy a la Drexciya so") and the problem is the framework needs constant updating and acknowledgement of things in the present whereas most Afrofuturists need to be sold things as progressive and experimental and futuristic.

I was in college a few years ago and I had a seminar that was actually afro-futurism themed and naturally I went in because my mentality was "I am gonna coast through this thing like nothing and it's gonna rule", did a final presentation on Brother From Another Planet, great times. However I could see the limits for my professor as an older gentleman, in that he compared Lil Yachty to Flavor Flav in the negative light. A shocking development considering he clearly was of the generation for whom Public Enemy was probably a thing. We never got into it fully but you could see he didn't see anything revolutionary or important in Yachty because he had nobody around to tell him such (not that Yachty was or had to be, but if he were...)

Have you ever followed Greg Tate on social media? It's very depressing how cut off he makes himself from modern society. Sees 'mainstreamification' in everything. Would he be able to comprehend or handle Drill of either the US or UK mannerisms? No, instead he goes with the mythos of J Dilla as a modern jazzer. MF Doom's mask, not LD's. I wish someone would sit him in a room and put on something like this, how would he take it?

people don't want to be atomised but they don't know how to resist it. it isn't thrilling so much as matter of fact.
i know im a pretty pathetic character but this is really the crux of my Problem, what brought me here. and also what draws me to the hyper-compression, inflated mid and lo ranges, cannabis torpor/pornographic languor of The Chillwave Continuum. this whole post is really brilliant i'd never thought of the use of compression in this stuff in that way before. music made almost entirely on laptops w high end tech that tries very hard to have discontinuity and forward motion, the effort put into it is so it DOESN'T sound immaterial, inconsequential, pre-programmed. faux materiality, synthesised room noise, stuff that fixates on using 'ugly' textures (ie yeongrak/the quantum natives orbit generally)
this is another thread i will really have to buckle the fuck down and do an effort post for
