In order to be cool you have to be calm, collected and unrushed. Tech people are balls of nervous energy frantically writing code and downloading apps quicker than the next tech person. The fiddly fumbling and effortful concentration needed to operate any kind of tech precludes a diffident demeanour.

Nothing says cool less than solving a Rubik's cube in fewer than 20 seconds. But there is no doubt that among tech nerds they have their own concept of cool: the cool tech nerd is hyper-intelligent, fluent in mathematics, a programming whiz with fantastic manual dexterity. Although these qualities typically express themselves in a blur of insectoid activity that appears the opposite of a Fonz's laid back disinvolture, in fact they are equivalent when considered relative to their immediate environments. The slow and steady ratiocination of a Fonz is more deliberate, better considered and more appropriate than the clueless flapping of his beta acolytes when faced with a novel problem, just as, when confronted with the need to quickly code up a casino-breaking app, the response of the alpha nerd is a flurry of fingers and machine-gun commentary rather than the bovine incomprehension and rabbit-in-the-headlights stasis of any normie onlooker.

To rephrase: the alpha cool normie shows their mastery of the situation through appropriately minimal activity, whereas the alpha cool nerd does the same but for a different type of situation and through appropriately maximal activity.

it's particularly cool on Thorstein Veblen's early 20th century critique of capitalism, conspicuous consumption etc

I remember reading somewhere that Jay Z never wears a pair of shoes twice.
