GRIME- breaking news, gossip, slander, lies etc

it's a crying shame how this thread has descended into post a random youtube video and press post; proper fucking depressing.

for the scene round my ends, (makina, hardcore) the ultimate goal is to get views on a youtube channel. Not record sales. None of the kids buy music anymore, but they see local guys spitting on youtube as the ultimate in succeeding in life and massively famous. Power to the people

I'm looking for an old article by Blackdown (I think) which discussed the view that Grime emcee'ing culture is increasing the range of the English language rather than having a detrimental effect on Queen's English.

I don't suppose anyone can remember such an article/know where it exists?

Might you be referring to the one where he dissects Trim's Flowdan diss on Vol. 3?

i hate to join in in the whole "let's post youtube youtube youtube" brigade but this tune is astonishing.

<object width="640" height="390"><param name="movie" value=""></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"></param><embed src="" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="640" height="390"></embed></object>

Good tune, but I can't get past it being a complete rip off of Zomby's eski tunes. Even used the same vocal samples.

why do you think this is slackk?

could it be because there just generally isnt much energy in the scene anymore - i must confess to being much less interested in grime the last 18months. There's nothing really interesting happening musically as far i can see - the character and personality of the sound has gradually been whittled away by the spectre of commercial success, or the promise of it.

I've instead turned more towards the road rap scene, i still love mc oriented music, i'm a sucker for intricate wordplay, clever rhymes and killer deliveries, but i also feel an energy and an enthusiasm coming through from that scene. It seems to have a clearly defined geographical and spiritual home, a roster or real characters , a lack of raves, but not a lack of work or work ethic - theres a lot of material to go through, but whats more, it seems to have a sense of ambition for the sound and the scene which grime has given up.

I still have love for the grime scene, i respect what some people are doing in trying to push things forward - elijah with the vinyl/instrumental side, real pioneers like d double (streetfigher) and trim (trim city) and obviously wiley still towers over the scene. But the constant forays into the commercial realm have just weakened the social and communal aspect to the scene. The scene is no longer so introverted, seeking to appeal to a wider audience, and in so doing, has lost its ferocity, energy and sonic appeal. One person who i think has managed that crossover quite well is JME, his new album is great, grime but poppy, but still has power and integrity.

I'm not blaming the mc's for making money, i'm blaming them for descending into commercialism too easily, sacrificing the culture and tradition that nurtured them and made them into stars, at least in the hood.

i feel pretty much the same. i like what guys like butterz are doing but even there, while i enjoy a lot of what i hear, it seems like its being geared towards of an eclectic crowd, ie dubstep fans, or people that would like producers like deadboy or ikonika etc more than say, jon e cash or musical mob. obv i know the people who liked grime back in 2004 prob arent there anymore for various reasons, but grime seems to still be in its identity crisis. there isnt that forward thrust anymore. which is what any small scene tends to need imo to keep going. since mcs started getting in the charts its just dampened the momentum cos not everyone is as good at making shit pop music as dizzee but they still keep trying.

i also just miss hearing good radio sets.

You name two producers who where big in 2002 6 years before I started djing and name two producers who are big in 2010 who I have never played music from.

Im not sure what you mean by that to be honest I just play music in the way I like to hear it, and in a way nobody was playing it before

not sure what you mean either but obv i know things change, people leave scenes, etc etc, so theres not many ppl who were making beats in 2002 who you could play in 2010. that wasnt my point. i was just saying a lot of the more hypercolour, bright and videogamey sort of grime which i think is cool, and its also fresher than a lot of the more straight up banger-style grime beats i hear these days, its more likely to appeal to say a crowd who are into a deadboy or ikonika than maybe a classic sidewinder type of crowd (not that this holds 100% perfectly i know, but still). thats just how things are moving it seems. and it makes sense cos producers will make music for where they see there is an audience. no point making music to fuck peoples heads up at grime nights that dont exist.
