i'm starting a new job next week, and need to get another suit. any recommendations of where to go in London? need something pretty smart and 'normal', but i don't want anything too boring.

am up for going bespoke, if it's not silly saville row prices.

thanks!

High street? M&S Autograph range, or if that is too boring Top Shop for the skinny suits
or check out http://www.suitsupply.co.uk/ or http://www.asuitthatfits.com/ for cheaper "bespoke". Think I've seen some good reviews of the latter and they've got 4 London "outlets" http://www.asuitthatfits.com/shop/index.php?option=com_google_maps&Itemid=332

Might need one myself soon, let us know what you opted for.

DISSENSUS, FIND THEM FOR ME NOW!

I'm loath to recommend the place, what with it being full of hipster scum, but that does sound like the kind of thing that American Apparel would do very well...their clothes are good, the people selling you the clothes are insufferable.

The Paul Smith sale shop has a load of nice suits. They have a pretty big discount off the normal price.

Spotted these at hipster-hangout Urban Outfitters last week, got stripes though.
Think they got mono-coloured ones at some of those tailors at Savile Row, but they are probably 20 quid (guessing here, I would not dare to set foot (sic) in there).

Finally got a new jacket, ended up going for a woolen Penfield parka. It's reet warm so it gets the thumbs up from me, money well spent.

Gah. Really hate the whole 'mountain style' thing. It always just seems like a horrible peversion of functionalism. A coat like that is fairly pointless to a mountaineer (lacks obvious stuff like a helmet compatible hood afaict) but then uses expensive materials like ProShell that are basically pointless unless you're also wearing wicking base and midlayers eg not a cotton t-shirt or a hoody. Pure pseud value. Grumble grumble grumble.

On a completely unrelated note, I'd never been to Banana Republic before this weekend - precisely what undesireable market segment do I fall into for thinking their stuff is really quite desireable in a pseudo-preppy-I-can-sort-of-just-about-afford sort of way?

I think, unfortunately, it's direct GQ reader target audience. I'm not knocking it - or you! - I thought with a sinking heart the other week about how one of my favourite items of clothing is from Gap, and how far I've fallen - but I think it's GQ, they kind of mix up BR stuff with things we can't afford, like all these :

which I think I would kill for at the moment.
