GhettoTek / B-more Recomendations

Are there any online mixes of this type of isht by way of an intro?

I wrote djfamily, it was seconded just after you asked. And I will AGAIN point you there. I'm telling you, shit is incredible. http://www.djfamily.jp

It's more detroit than anything, but fricking amazing.

this is my feminist crisis music. I tried listening to a Godfather mix while reading MacKinnon and my brain kind of melted. But it sounds so damn good! and it's so damn danceable!

I got to big up K-Swift the queen of baltimore club music - I think she's got some mixes floating around. She says she's "baltimore's only female dj" though.. that can't be right, can it?

U-Basstard

tragic mix
Tittsworth - party guaranteed b-more mashups

Starsky and Clutch - Dabrye's alias alongside soundmurderer fella, Todd Osborne (?), check the players, ballers... 12". you've never heard R Kelly sound this good.

both hardwax.de and clone.nl have well stocked detroit booty/ghettotek selections

detroit in effect - you can't see us ! on clone forgot about that one - absolute classic.

with regards to muzique they started up again with some excellent hard jackin acid and chicago stuff. other tuff chicago stuff is robert armani - pitched up. big dick and fuse box especially - he recorded on dance mania too. marcus mixx twisted shit as well.

I saw DJ Assault play at a club my mates did at the 333 about 6 years ago. Blinding DJ technically. He was playing jump up jungle records and scratching booty bass over the top.

This stuff generally does nothing for me - too many nights spent in the company of pasty white hipsters getting a hard-on at the sound of black men being rude to each other, not my bag.

But most of the chicago relief/dance mania crowd have done stuff on this tip. DJ Rush is someone to look out for who hasn't already been mentioned.

I started DJing this stuff in 97 and I kinda lost interest when the lyrics became too obscene. I have no problem with lyrics saying "i want to have sex" but i don't like the hatred of women in some of the tracks.

I am white but not hip, never saw too many hip people at the things I play at either but maybe booty music got more hip since then or maybe I just never get asked to play at those parties (hmm could be!!)

I would say with new Muzique stuff and DJ Rush we are moving pretty far from the original topic, not that theres any law against that of course.

the ghettotech stuff isn't mostly hipsters, i wouldn't say, it's some local producers and DJs out of baltimore.

i haven't heard any lyrics that were so bad i couldn't see why they weren't just juvenile humor, but maybe they exist...

With the hipster thing, I'm speaking from personal experience. There was one particular crew in my circle of aquantances at the time who got off on the music in a really wierd projected fantasy kind of way - they would go to nights and be really lairy with the girls etc. It was pretty odious.

Lyrics-wise, I've heard emcees shouting stuff like

"Hold up girl it smell like a trout, take it home & wash it out"

He got a bit of grief of the girls in the crowd for that, understandably. And there's a DJ Rush track I've got which is a 10 minute monologue of how he beat some girl up over a jacking beat.

Maybe I'm just too sensitive:eek:

Baltimore Club perhaps wasn’t about ‘‘‘‘hipsters’’’’ before (it looks like it), but it has been for more than two years, so it’s hardly just ‘some local producers and DJs out of baltimore.’ I like some GhettoTek tracks, but I play them at -6 or -8, so maybe I don’t ‘get it’.

Guybrush is right on both counts: Nice to play them slowed down. I do that sometimes too.
Baltimore was underground local stuff 10 years ago, now it is not. Detroit and Chicago ghetto stuff never got jumped on by the hiperati to the extent that Baltimore has.

I know there was an article in iD or the Face once about Detroit bass and a compilation of DJ Assault on MoWax but it's hardly Spank Rock level of things is it?

Did i just coin the word hiperati?

Probably not....

About sexism - we could talk about it forever and I would probably only be able to come out with obvious stuff like "people with limited imaginations have a hard time realising that other people are people too, with inner lives and feelings just like you"
...first time I met DJ Godfather (who I like) he had a video camera and he was showing me girls he had filmed at parties in the USA flashing their tits etc. We were in a club in London and he started trying to film girls and asking them to flash etc. and they were just kissing off their teeth at him, telling him to get lost.
I found it hard to understand A) that the girls in American clubs were up for it and B) that he expected girls here to be up for it...
etc
I guess there is something different about it cos in Detroit they play ghetto music mostly in strip clubs whereas here is was pretty much limited to a few former techno-obsessives looking for something new - ie clubs full of mostly boys watching the DJ instead of dancing.

anyway I was sort of stupidly patriotically proud of the London girls not taking it.

miss amp wrote this and i like it:

i don't know anyone who takes ghetto bass seriously, sometimes i get a bit - 'that's a bit off' about some of the lyrics, incidentally i saw assault once and he was making comments that the ladies in the house should show him their 'bristol and west's' and they pretty much told him to fuck off, he looked a bit gutted.

who did that track 'he ain't my baby daddy, he's just a sperm donor' ohhh:)

I used to be really into this stuff still like a bit. I opened for dj funk and dj deeon in 96 and dj godfather in 97 under another alias i used at the time.

My personal faves are on dancemania,
deeon,
funk.
jammin gerald.
nehpets
etc..

there was also some good joints on underground construction.

an old buddy of mine made a little documentary about the chicago ghetto trax thing:

Diplo and Spankrock and them were pretty influential in marketing it to a style-conscious, downwardly mobile but moneyed mostly white crowd.. I also think that there's something a bit weird about watching a group of mostly moneyed white folks getting down to some of the lyrics. I think they don't mind'em because they don't feel implicated by them and there is some racism in that.

i haven't heard any lyrics that were so bad i couldn't see why they weren't just juvenile humor, but maybe they exist...

oh they do.
