Deep reggae like 'Heart of the Congos'....

Trojan did a Yabby You double CD box set a few years back - Jesus Dread (so he's not an orthodox rasta - believes Jesus, not Selassie, is the messiah). It's all mid-70s stuff and this box set has all the dubs and assorted versions as well. Your opening lines reminded me of it - especially the word "mournful" - so much so that I really have to be in the mood to listen to it. But it may be right up your alley at the moment. Its slow, melancholic, heartfelt, very spiritual. More like hymns with heavy bass than a reggae as we know it.

I've just stuck this on again and flicking through the sleevenotes it says:

As one dread, who shall remain nameless remarked at the time "This makes all the others sound like The Osmonds.

That about sums it up!

I think this is the Blood and Fire one... Has it got stuff like 'Love Thy Neighbour' and 'Natty Dread on the Mountain Top'?

Woops!

Still listening, it really is a great set when you're in the mood....

defo. i like the story of how he heard jesus talking to him during a thunder storm that salassie wasn't the messiah, which (unsuprisingly) led to arguments the next day.

That sounds perfect. I will seek it out.

I think it's just Yabby You who is the Jesus Dread, a rasta who believes in Christ, not Selassie (don't ask me!). I'm sure I've read an interview where he mentions some of the musicians having a problem with trinity because he wasn't a rasta. Yabby You had locks and I don't think Trinity did (not that this proves anything).

Easy VV, Im not a specialist but can recomend The Trojan Roots Box sets which contains 3 CD's worth of material often at £7.99. There's some tracks with would meet your requirements on those. Burning Spear has one of best roots voices but doesnt have the dub wizardry of Lee Perry productions you might be looking for.

From a UK perspective early Misty in Roots. Man, those horns . . .

Just bumped this as I've found an amazing tune that fits the bill.

Jah Give Us Life by The Wailing Souls.

Gone straight into my list of favourite reggae tunes.

Twas the first 12" Greensleeves ever released. Recently repressed and also on their Waling Souls "Most Wanted" comp, which is very good.

There's a new Jimmy Radway reissue on Pressure Sounds called 'Dub-I'. Proper!

It's fantastic. The vocal versions to many of the dubs are on a compilation called 'Keep The Pressure Down' which is a must have.

The PK compilation is worth a look, recorded in Canada with a lot of Jamaican expats, it's got an amazing sound. Hugh Mundell also is quite deep and mournful roots, the Africa Must Be Free set is excellent.
