"Waste of time. Shitty erotica, apart from Salon Kitty."
Not totally true I'd say. Sure, all his late ones are precisely as described but Salon Kitty is great and Caligula is like Salon Kitty but more so - a really incredibly over the top depiction of the mad emperor and his mad hangers on that obvously dovetails well with Salon Kitty. It was badly interfered with (Brass said it became a film about "the power of orgy rather than the orgy of power" whatever that means) but I think that just adds to the utter off-the-rails bonkersness of the whole experience. Make sure you watch the version that has all the cut scenes put back in and then a few extra hardcore porn bits added just for good measure. Unfortunately Brass was prevented from ever filming what sounds like a brilliant scene in which Caligula was to ride into the senate on his newest senator (his horse as we all know) facing backwards and then announce that it is about to make its first speech - following which the horse would have deposited a large load of manure.
Prior to his well known films Tinto Brass made a number of experimental art films which are very hard to get hold of as far as I know. I've seen L'Urlo (The Howl) without subtitbles which appears to be in the same vein as Head or maybe even Weekend - it's enough of a visual experience to make it worthwhile without subtitles but I'd like to see it properly.
From IMDB

"2 Eggs; to break, broke, broken", the only English phrase spoken and theme song in Tinto Brass' "L'Urlo". What a film! The only available version of this film I could find had no subtitles. Either way it doesn't matter since it is very visual. When most people here the name Tinto Brass, right away they think of the horrid sleaze epic "Caligula", or some might name "Salon Kitty". If your lucky, you'll here of some who have seen his fun slapstick sex comedies from Italy like "Miranda" and "All Ladies Do it". Known mainly for his lighthearted sex romps with curvy women, Tinto Brass' earliest experimental films were much different. Heres a recipe for a film like "L'Urlo". Take some Fellini, add some Jodorowsky/Arrabal and a little table spoon of Godard for extra kick, stir and you got yourself "L'Urlo". One crazy psychedelic, surrealist anti-war art orgy. A bus is lit on fire! Hippies are chased by riot cops. There's stock footage of Vietnam and other wars with a machine gun showdown! S&M, slapstick sexuality, a man's pursuit of a beautiful lady... abstract art and nudity galore! Most memorable is a man in a gas mask jumping around with nude people while goose feather's fill the air! One amazing experimental protest movie! Rebel art at its finest! The films music and images are amazing! This is one film that screams for a DVD release, not to mention a soundtrack. The one song during the burning bus scene sounded like the punk band "Dead Kennedys", almost 10 years before they were around. This film is pure punk rock, before punk even existed. Who says that political, subversive films can't be fun? This ones a must see!"

Also Neurosubianco is reputed to be similarly nuts but I've never seen it.

And likewise Col Cuore In Gola (with Jean-Louis Trintignant) which I'd really like to see if anyone has it

It's got to be better than Bay of Blood anyway which is a right load of bollocks.

Alright, Rich, steady on mate!

Is inventing the slasher movie not enough for you?

I've nothing against Bava in general - I was just distinctly underwhelmed by Bay of Blood.

Anyway, back to more important stuff....

What is described as a trailer for L'Urlo here

Though it doesn't look like a trailer to me, it just seems to be a sequence from near the beginning of the film - with subtitles annoyingly although they make pretty much no sense ("what a wonderful smell of smegma") so I probably didn't miss that much.

Actually, looks as though the films in question have been released after all and this is a trailer of sorts

"craner
I bet you saw the 18-cert Uk version!"
It's possible.

Here are the Brass films for sale in fact... can't wait to watch all these

This bit quite interesting

"It can be said that with this film (Col Cuore In Gola , Cinema Fumetti (comic-book movies) was invented prior to the more known DANGER: DIABOLIK"
Seems that Guido Crepax was involved. Speaking of whom, have you ever seen that Valentiina film? It's not much cop.

I reckon Rich and I are on either side of the French/Italian Eurocult divide. He's more arty, and I'm vulgar.

You've nailed it - if there's one thing I despise it's vulgarity. Anyone who knows me would tell you the same.

i'd like to discover more about these italian eurocult directors; what makes their minds tick etc. are there books concerning Bava, Fulci, Argento, Leone etc? preferably a book that's reasonably priced and written for the non academic!

There's not much about in English -- but you could check out Troy Howarth on Bava, Alan Jones on Argento.

You should have the Monte Hellman book very soon.... very soon indeed, it's so close I can almost taste it.

Not read it - I bet Matt has - anyway we had better get back to European stuff before we ruin Craner's beautiful thread.
Anyone seen this? It looks as though it ought to be great

A great film! Slow: YES.
...but original, deeply atmospheric, dark and horrifying, perfectly SURREAL (feels like a nightmare).
I'd compare it to David Lynch (Eraserhead, Inland Empire, Blue Velvet) style maybe with mixed with a little bit of Barton Fink and Naked Lunch (Insects!). Also a bit of Jodorowsky (Fando y Lis)....
Add some Night on Earth, Angel Heart and a bit of Begotten, Pi, (would it be wrong to mention Tetsuo?) Jacob's Ladder, Barker's The Forbidden and Salome - that should form together at least the concept of a dark night... NUIT NOIRE.
If you're out for avantegardistic and/or surrealistic cinema (like I am) you're gonna like this one. If you're expecting anything else like a movie full of action with some average plot - try your luck with something else.
Final words: The plot is very, very strange and unusual and that's probably the #1 reason why most people who don't appreciate this film hate it.
