none of it sounds very fresh to me
This is a bit old now (well, it's from earlier this year, but that's old in terms of the fast moving world of modern music, eh?), so it doesn't have any of the more recent classics on it (eg Rustie 'Zig-Zag' etc), but i think this is a great primer for the wonky sound:

And some fucking sweet mixes going on in there too.
cool, there's a track in 5/4 time on there
I knew this day would come
I'll never understand "wonky" as a genre
a) it describes artists who operate in a number of their own genres, but are just doing an off-beat variation of whatever style is typical to that genre
b) which pretty much makes the term exactly what it is - an adjective. Hip hop that's "wonky". Dubstep that's "wonky".
c) it's really just one of the worst words in the english language. it makes me cringe every time I hear someone seriously use it.
"Funky" was bad enough. Do we really have to continue going down the road of labeling our music as if we were hopelessly out-of-touch parents trying to describe what our kids listen to?

no-one's arguing with funky house. and wonky means something else for house really. i just don't actually believe *the kids* or any1 apart from a few bloggers are saying 'wonky'. maybe i'm wrong.
I don't like any of the downtempo, don't see the attraction of 'Fly-Lo', that skwee stuff is pointless, it is all abit idm-ish.
Wonky House all day!

The sort of person who likes this music writes an artist off if they heard a pitch push in one mix break it up till its broken
that skwee stuff is pointless, it is all abit idm-ish.
So it's more like you don't like it cos the scorn you're trying to pour on it is completley muddled.
doom said:I don't like...
what does that mean?
I said it was idm-ish, not idm mkII. You are correct, the formal musical elements that make up downtempo wonk & idm are different, the audience however...
wonky doesn't feel free-flowing and unplanned or natural
which is the hallmark (in my opinion) of great art
probably will be massive
ho hum
But, I do actually like the fact that the same word can be used at the same time for 2 such divergent tangents & I don't get why the word wonky is any dumber than the word bassy or the word house.
which makes it more interesting as a meme than an actual genre, which in itself is a very interesting thing as it means that it moves beyond dance music genres into a weird kind of game of association. Maybe that's where we're going that's where we came from.
