wonky

Shonx

Shallow House
none of it sounds very fresh to me

Seems a bit emperor's new clothes to me - a lot of what I've heard could have been made ten or more years ago. Lulz at the trip hop tag anyway (doesn't that apply to deep dubstep more though ;) )

This is a bit old now (well, it's from earlier this year, but that's old in terms of the fast moving world of modern music, eh?), so it doesn't have any of the more recent classics on it (eg Rustie 'Zig-Zag' etc), but i think this is a great primer for the wonky sound:

And some fucking sweet mixes going on in there too.

cool, there's a track in 5/4 time on there

I knew this day would come

The Rip-Off Artist did a whole EP of hip-hop beats in non-standard time in early 2003. Think there's a good reason why this kind of stuff doesn't catch on. :p

Mind you, last track I released on a CD was in 5 too, it was just nothing to do with dancing..

is not like other people
I'll never understand "wonky" as a genre

a) it describes artists who operate in a number of their own genres, but are just doing an off-beat variation of whatever style is typical to that genre
b) which pretty much makes the term exactly what it is - an adjective. Hip hop that's "wonky". Dubstep that's "wonky".
c) it's really just one of the worst words in the english language. it makes me cringe every time I hear someone seriously use it.

"Funky" was bad enough. Do we really have to continue going down the road of labeling our music as if we were hopelessly out-of-touch parents trying to describe what our kids listen to?

funky, wonky, cranky bongle aquastep
it's embarassing :slanted:
the best stuff on that mix sounds liek good old fashioned idm to me.
as we know, however, you can't call it that in case people think you're calling them stupid-
so idiotic genre names like wanky, spanky, aquapoo, etc make sense.
tune id at 9:00 anyone?

no-one's arguing with funky house. and wonky means something else for house really. i just don't actually believe *the kids* or any1 apart from a few bloggers are saying 'wonky'. maybe i'm wrong.

Thats what I'm sayin tho. I like the word because its got no fixed address. & people are using it (outside of teh blogs) - kids are trading 'wonky house' tracks, just like every term that gets used as a slur, its been adopted as an aesthetic.

I don't like any of the downtempo, don't see the attraction of 'Fly-Lo', that skwee stuff is pointless, it is all abit idm-ish.

Wonky House all day!

The sort of person who likes this music writes an artist off if they heard a pitch push in one mix break it up till its broken

so...

lol in the morning freestyle

It's almost the opposite to idm, it uses wilfully limited means it's colourful, dumb, riffy and funky, not the least bit deep/abstract/complicated/stern.

So it's more like you don't like it cos the scorn you're trying to pour on it is completley muddled.

I don't like...

I said it was idm-ish, not idm mkII. You are correct, the formal musical elements that make up downtempo wonk & idm are different, the audience however...

As a whole the downtempo wonky stuff comes off idm-ish to me, its 'head' music, stiff (not so much in a quantization way) & edity, colourful to no real end, infact its so colored outside of the lines its gone greyscale, its uni student irony, in-joke music... It doesn't sound all that funky to me, but perhaps I've missed that. I really hate video game, '8bit' sounds & solo-esque riffage.

I don't like it, I'm not pouring scorn. But, I do actually like the fact that the same word can be used at the same time for 2 such divergent tangents & I don't get why the word wonky is any dumber than the word bassy or the word house.

wonky doesn't feel free-flowing and unplanned or natural

which is the hallmark (in my opinion) of great art

probably will be massive

thats the opposite of what is when it's good, it's electronic music's chance to get well oceanic without the usual 'held chord' signifiers. There is a reason the music has also had the work aqua crunk applied to it .

Also having seen alot of the ppl discussed live, they bang in clubs.

I just dont know
i agree that a lot of this stuff is head music (as in mind not body), but so what? who decided that that was objectively a bad thing? at least if thats going to be asserted then we should have some discussion about why thats 'bad'... too much assertion and derision, where is the substance?

in any case i think in some of these artists there is a really nice balance between mind expansion and body compulsion, people like Zomby, Rustie, Starkey etc. even Flying Lotus i think is in some ways pretty banging, i get the sense with him that while he's obviously quite into psychedelia that at his heart he still likes a raw drum break and some bump

in any case again, is the mind / body binary really an appropriate one?

continuum, obviously you're entitled to your opinion of what constitutes great art, but i don't know why you're feeling to pour scorn on those who don't share it. all i've seen in this thread and anywhere else around this music so far is enthusiasm and positivity, no sense of superiority or 'true school' (to me one of the real abhorrences of some sides of 'IDM'), so i don't get why you feel to essentially insult the people who are enjoying this stuff

which makes it more interesting as a meme than an actual genre, which in itself is a very interesting thing as it means that it moves beyond dance music genres into a weird kind of game of association. Maybe that's where we're going that's where we came from.

I don't think the idm crowd, which was a long time ago now, and the people that are interested in wonky are the same at all, the nights i've been to are very young mixed kinda hip hop heads, the music is mixed up and the tempos are too.

Basically haters are hating on it here.
