Bill Motley's SF-based Moby Dick label (which grew out of the club of the same name) also deserves a mention, releasing tracks by Boys Town Gang ("Ain't no mountain", etc.) and Lisa ("Rocket to your heart", etc.). Proceeds from sales, although modest, were used to support up-and-coming artists such as Loverde, whose producer was Patrick Cowley. Cowley also played synths on Moby Dick releases like Hot Posse's "An American Dream". A great Cowley site here.dannyDMX said:Bobby "O" and Patrick Cowley are like the twin pedestals of Hi-NRG.
Bobby O's productions with the drag queen Divine were also big hits, things like "Love Reaction" and "Shoot your shot". Divine later worked with Stock, Aitken, Waterman, who pretty much dominated hi-NRG during the last half of the 80s, with tracks like Dead or Alive's "You spin me round (like a record)" (which has cropped up repeatedly since in various remix guises) and of course your Kylie, Rick Astley, Bananarama...
And Irene Cara got Oscars and Grammys for her songs on the Fame and Flashdance soundtracks. "What a feelin'" and the like aside, do check out things like the Moroder-produced instrumental to "Breakdance", which still sounds fresh today.dannyDMX said:And of course the Evelyn Thomas song "High Energy".
Totally underrated. I've always though a track like "I want your lovin'" deserved a decent remix. The Canadian (especially Montreal) hi-NRG connection seems pretty strong: Roni Griffith, Lime ("Your Love", etc.), Trans-X ("Living on Video", 1983), Carol Jiani (who also released things on Moby Dick), producers Gino Soccio and Tony Green (France Joli), Suzy Q, Laura Branigan...dannyDMX said:Last night I heard Voodoo Man by Roni Griffith, which was hot as well.
On a sonic level, there are some pretty amazing things, especially on the flipsides where you get all sorts of dubby madness. Well worth looking into, but as you said, dannyDMX said:This stuff is all mostly instrumental, electronic, occasionally vocoded or disco nonsense vocals (ahhhahhh) and has dated really well to my ears.
