isn't the comment in the first post about how this new channel is out of US control. Not that shocking unless you actually buy "the conventional wisdom held that the Chinese only could copy but not innovate"
About time really. In fairness, Chinese industry is very good at emulating tech invented elsewhere. While I was working at ASML a few years ago, a Chinese firm began making knock-off versions of some of our machines that even looked the same and had a similar name. They were miles out in terms of spec but that wasn't the point, because they were far cheaper and were aiming for a different section of the market.
Of course, that's not mutually exclusive with innovating as well. The article makes a good point about the popularity of engineering degrees in China. Indeed the whole culture has a respect and enthusiasm for science that's practically vanished from Western countries (except maybe Israel, to the extent that Israel counts as a 'Western' country). Which is odd when you set it against the massive popularity of traditional Chinese medicine, but then no-one ever said a culture has to be rigorously internally consistent.
