Beyonce- Drunk In Love (2013)

A very hypnotic (non-)structure this has. It meanders and weaves and never full forms. Climaxes aren’t impacts, but rather emerge gradually. They’re drawn out like hazy vapours from a cauldron. An akai vocal stretch over a whole song.

Temporal delirium.

Alkaline- Obeah/Ready (2013)

“The origin of the obeah superstition undoubtebly lies in that worship, with view to conciliation, of the Spirit of Evil”

Herbert T. Thompson, Something About Obeah, 1891

“CYMBALS: These are improvised melodies with
lyrics which are predominantly based on nonsense
syllables called "language" or "unknown tongues".
This type of song is said to be a conversation between
the spirits and the singer, and is sung only in solo.
Cymbals are peculiar to Pukkumina.”

Edward Seaga, liner notes ‘Folk Music of Jamaica’

“It is the spoken word, the curse of the song, to which the special magic clings in all beliefs about obeah practice”

Martha Warren Beckwith, Black Roadways

working class fellas wearing shirts with top button done up during their leisure time. the rinse fm pop uniform.

i wrote a whole piece, would you believe - at the instigation of fashion mag Another Man, despite me knowing next to nothing about fashion - about the buttoned up thing. it goes back to the Sixties. my thesis was that it was a way of showing that you weren't a slob but you weren't middle class either. you pointedly didn't have a tie, symbol of office workers and the bourgeois, but you were dead set on constricting your breathing anyway.

I remember when Sadmanbarty first started posting here. He used to post nothing but crap avant-garde Bandcamp stuff.

Now we're supposed to buy into his dancehall/pop/rap/drill expert persona? :crylarf:

2) a similar convergence happened at the dawn of the 2010's with lex luger, daseca/not nice and pinero beats/skippz productions all converging on this tacky orchestral wagnarian rapture. this grit and aggression spoke to the captured the pandemonium and concrete of the zeitgeist (occupy wall street, the london riots, the arab spring, etc.

The embodiment (to some extent) of the early 2010s:

big knob blissblog did a piece at the time about "maximalism" in music. i suppose this all fits into that.

its around the same time that superhero films and 3d films got really popular i think. widescreen, high definition chaos.
