And if you seriously don't think Prince was the cleverest marketer/fan base panderer ever then idk what to tell you. The difference is he did it his way.

Thats my whole point mate. Prince was himself, regardless of marketing or pandering, and you can feel it. The weirdness and reality cuts through in his music. MJ is k-pop precursor. It's a facade.

A pretty dramatic response that, all in all- no-one would deny Jacko's upbringing is pretty tragic but i didn't talk about any of that. Just think he's pretty boring.

His music is boring? Or him as a person? I dont think he ever got a chance to become someone other than what everyone wanted. Fair play tho

I think he's just not there in his music. He's solely at the service of the music. He doesn't Impose himself on it or project himself through it. Not as a personality. As a set of aesthetic inclinations, as a voice, as a musical intelligence of course he's there and Couldn't fail to be

Considering this, he still achieved way more than millions of supposed self-having humans could ever claim. What he did for race relations is without precedent and probably a big part of why so many people still love him.

And fwiw I personally think he had loads of personality. Peter Panish, childlike, certainly not street and sexy like Prince, but a totally unique angelic thing which obviously isn't going to be doing it for the average dissensian

Pattys very passionate about Michael Jackson. Some people have things you can't joke about. Like those kids that go psychotic if you say something about their mum.

It seems almost impossible to cover a prince song without sounding very much like prince. They're so idiosyncratic. What Jackson covers are there? There's that dancehall billie Jean one. What else

It's like certain rappers ghostwriting and it's so obviously unmistakably them cos only they write like that

reggae seems to be the only way you could cover an MJ track. I have this 12" 45 rpm, sounds so great when loud

Sort of. His downfall was my generation's jfk, mlk, 9/11 level event. I looked up to him more than anyone else. And for whatever reason the race thing was always close to my heart from really young. No idea why, maybe because one of my first best friends was a boy I met in the carribean when I was 3. We quickly became like brothers. It simple didn't make sense to my childish mind why people of different races couldn't get along. And there was Michael singing my naive feelings, all pure and meaning it. Then when I was in my early teens the shit hit the fan and hope and innocence were stripped away in a moment. People changed after it. The things they joked about being the most obvious example. Dancing with the devil and laughing it up. It's a daily thing now. People think nothing of it. Before the allegations came out it was a different world. Its a bit like the Ricky Gervais/Office subject from a while back. It signified a massive social change. Although there's much less doubt in my mind as to whether the event was the cause or not.

Prince I like a lot more than I used to, I recognise his genius. But I've not dug deep enough. I have a feeling he's got a better catalogue. He also has a big influence in terms of birthing the electro RNB (via Jam and Lewis) that I absolutely love.

It occurred to me that the Neptunes were in some ways a fusion of Prince and MJ - the jerky, angular production plus the sweet harmonies. And the Neptunes are my GOATs.

The best of MJ is just pure bliss afaic, although it's purity has been smeared over the years ofc. It's a sort of perfection - the Ponce in me wants to compare MJ to Mozart and Prince to Beethoven.
