One of the reasons South Korea has done comparatively so well, at least thus far, is a much higher proportion of cases being younger people

partially due to the first main infection cluster being in, of all things, a messianic cult/megachurch called Shincheonji Church of Jesus

if you assume Italy has a far higher number of cases than are actually reported, the death rate there falls more in line with the suspected global one

assumptions aren't facts, of course, but it seems reasonable given their lack of testing

as with uk and possibly spain - the three highest death rates of the countries majorly affected (8%, 4.4% and 4%, i think)

says she refused a fine after yep, she didn't have the right proof to be out

i feel so conflicted about this. at one hand i feel like yeh maybe it's the best thing to do on the other hand i feel like my god the powers we give our governments.

this is a scene from france today. can't say if it's legit but i'm assuming. the woman didn't have the right form with her or something.

lmao Mnuchin mentioned 20+% U.S. unemployment rate yesterday then backed off it just now saying basically he only said it to scare Congress into passing relief bill

for reference the only time, since it started being recorded, that U.S. unemployment rate went over 20% is the heart of the Great Depression

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain on Wednesday ordered schools to close for millions of children until further notice after criticism that the government was too slow to react to the spread of coronavirus.

The majority of schools will close from Friday, although some will be asked to remain open to support the children of essential workers like health care employees, education minister Gavin Williamson told parliament.

The proximal origin of SARS-CoV-2

It is improbable that SARS-CoV-2 emerged through laboratory manipulation of a related SARS-CoV-like coronavirus

[…]

Instead, we propose two scenarios that can plausibly explain the origin of SARS-CoV-2: (i) natural selection in an animal host before zoonotic transfer; and (ii) natural selection in humans following zoonotic transfer. We also discuss whether selection during passage could have given rise to SARS-CoV-2

[…]

1. Natural selection in an animal host before zoonotic transfer. As many early cases of COVID-19 were linked to the Huanan market in Wuhan1,2 , it is possible that an animal source was present at this location. Given the similarity of SARSCoV-2 to bat SARS-CoV-like coronaviruses2 , it is likely that bats serve as reservoir hosts for its progenitor.

[…]

2. Natural selection in humans following zoonotic transfer.
It is possible that a progenitor of SARS-CoV-2 jumped into humans, acquiring the genomic features described above through adaptation during undetected human-to-human transmission. Once acquired, these adaptations would enable the pandemic to take off and produce a sufficiently large cluster of cases to trigger the surveillance system that detected it

So president just been speaking, looks like Portugal basically goes on lock-down from midnight. You can still go to supermarket, pharmacy or hospital but police can stop anyone and ask them where they are going etc
