The Dissensus Album Canon

And I do also have a problem with the state for what they did to Gerald. That does colour me

only rockist "electronica" fans talk about the albums they made after gerald left like they're classics. after that they have their moments, i guess, but are pretty gross on the whole.

Replied then deleted. I dunno, I think they had a radio show at one point which was really good? Sure I've listened to some bits of that. And maybe Gerald is really difficult. But I love voodoo ray in a way that nothing on new build moves me. I did used to like the other one, Pacific state

yeah it has a very different vibe than voodoo ray, which is almost pop acid house. newbuild is much harder and more labyrinthine. so i can see how with voodoo ray or pacific state as the reference point it wouldn't seem very good.

didn't know they had a radio show, could be interesting.

will forgive catalog if he cancels all his albums then he doesn't have to like newbuild. that also includes cancelling Tricky though.

labyrinthine in the sense that it's hard to get your bearings in a given track. there's always a lot happening at once, but almost no large scale changes, so you're constantly hearing something and thinking, "wait, has that always been like that?" the way the music resists being mentally mapped out makes it more mysterious and immersive. (and "trippy" if i can use that word. :D)

voodoo ray has that too, but it's not quite as "advanced" as newbuild in that respect.

of course the appeal of this approach is another matter...

and yeah, "harder" in the sense that it's not so much pretty as "mental" and high intensity, as barty pointed out. more of a harsh, eerie sci fi atmosphere as well.

barty and luka both love pulling the rug out from under you like that. "oh, that song i did an awesome write up of earlier? i actually think it's boring, i was just pretending to like it as an intellectual game!"
